Six Nations of Women

After the ups and downs of the men’s Six Nations tournament (at least for Irish fans), the women’s edition gets underway next weekend. First up for Ireland is a trip to Cardiff. Wales won that match on the opening weekend of last season’s tournament at Dublin’s RDS Arena, giving the Irish women hope for a better start to the 2023 edition. In fact, there is currently a huge gap between the two top teams, England and France, and the other competing nations. Closing this gap will be a big goal. – Saturday, RTE 2

MotoGP

The pinnacle of motorcycle racing is one of those sports that fans just can’t get enough of but seems to go largely unnoticed by the rest of the world. The 2023 season gets underway this weekend at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal. The championship is divided into four classes: MotoE (which uses electric bikes), Moto3, Moto2 and the top-level MotoGP. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) will start as favorite to retain the MotoGP Riders’ Championship, although teammate Enea Bastianini will have something to say on that, as will Marc Márquez (Honda), who already has six MotoGP crowns, and 2021 champion Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha ). – Friday-Sunday, BT Sport

The boat race

One of those oddities where 99.9% of people only tune in to a sport for one day each year. The University Boat Race is rowed between open sterns on the River Thames in London by the best of Cambridge University Boat Club and Oxford University Boat Club. There is some Irish interest, with Tom Lynch rowing for the Cambridge men’s team, Caoimhe Dempsey rowing for the club’s women’s team and Alannah Burdess in the Oxford women’s boat. The 2022 women’s race was won by Cambridge in record time, while Oxford won the men’s race, ending a run of three consecutive Cambridge victories. It is certainly one of Britain’s most quintessential annual sporting events. – Sunday, BBC
