Women’s tennis drops WAC opener at Tarleton
STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women’s tennis team (UTRGV) lost their opening game of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) 6-1 to the Tarleton Texans at the Potishman-Lard tennis courts on Friday.
The rival matchup started with an intense doubles session. Tarletons Martha Makantasi/Clara Sobius scored a 6-4 win in flight #1, then UTRGV’s junior team Isabelle Bahr and second graders Marjorie Souza battled to a solid 6-4 win in Flight #2 and all eyes on Court 3.
Tarleton’s duo of Ximena Morales/Elif Albayrak rolled early in the No. 3 fight to take a 5-0 lead. But UTRGV’s second year Daniela Rosenberg and newbie Yaiza Vazquez showed incredible determination under pressure and took control of the game, winning six straight games and taking a 6-5 lead before the Texans equalized 6-6. The pairs played back and forth, trading points mostly on serve before Morales/Albayrak clinched the 7-6 (8-6) win to take the colon and the 1-0 advantage.
The singles matches were also contested, but Tarleton (9-4) won through Emma Persson, Makantasi, Albayrak and Sobius secure victory and take a 5-0 lead.
second grader Barbara Martinez launched the Vaqueros (5-6) with a strong 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win in their No. 4 match. Souza struggled in her No. 3 match but fell 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 Elsa Boison.
The Vaqueros visit Abilene Christian for a WAC competition Sunday at 11am.
