Snow is expected to fall in Kansas City as a winter storm sweeps through the Missouri Ozarks overnight Tuesday, according to the Kansas City National Weather Service.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for most of the Kansas City region, where one to three inches of snow is possible. Some areas could see more.
Meanwhile, a winter storm warning has been issued along and south of Interstate 44 in southern Missouri, where 5 to 10 inches of snow is likely. Up to a foot of snow is possible in some areas.
The Missouri Department of Public Safety encourages motorists to do so Avoid being on the streets when it is snowing.
While Kansas City doesn’t expect as much snow, slippery roads and dangerous conditions are possible Wednesday morning.
Crews set out Tuesday morning to treat the streets of Kansas City ahead of the storm. City Manager Brian Platt said so on social media. Residents were asked to wait 24 hours after the snowfall stopped before calling 311 to report slippery spots.
The city didn’t expect the storm to affect garbage service, but it did delay bulky waste pickup scheduled for Wednesday for a week.
time of the storm
A mix of rain and snow could start around 6 p.m. in Kansas City and Sedalia. According to the Weather Service’s forecast discussion, a thin layer of warm air will prevent the first few hours of precipitation from turning to snow in areas south of Interstate 70.
Snowfalls are not expected to be heavy for the first hour or two.
“If for some reason you are awake closer to midnight, you may see some larger snowflakes as temperatures cool,” the weather service said. “That’s pretty awesome.”
After midnight, temperatures are expected to drop to almost 30 degrees. Then the weather service expects heavier snowfalls. It will begin to relax during Wednesday’s morning commute. Light snow is expected to linger in the subway through midday as the storm pushes east.
Another light snowfall is possible Wednesday night through Thursday morning, although totals are unlikely to be significant.
Temperatures remain below freezing on Wednesday before falling into the teens overnight. A cold day is expected on Thursday with temperatures reaching the upper 20s.
Conditions will be warmer early in the weekend with temperatures rising to the 40’s on Friday and close to the 40’s on Saturday. Bitter cold is coming on Sunday, with temperatures only rising into the upper single and tens of digits, according to the weather service.
