Virginia Downs Shorthanded Men’s Tennis, 4-0
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Twelfth-ranked Virginia defeated No. 9 North Carolina 4-0 on Friday afternoon in the hall of Boar’s Head Inn.
The Cavaliers won a hard-fought double before winning singles games at No. 4, No. 6 and No. 1.
UVA improved to 13-4 overall this season and 5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina lost their first ACC match of the year, falling to 11-5, 3-1.
Tar Heel graduate student Brian Cernoch was unable to play Friday and missed his first career game in five years with Carolina. student in the first year Will Jansen played doubles but no singles but UNC saw the juniors return Logan Zapp in the program for the first time this spring.
In doubles, UVA’s Chris Rodesch and William Woodall beat Karl Poland and Jansen doubled in 2nd place, 6-0, ahead of Zapp and Benjamin Kitty defeated Alexander Kiefer and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg 6-3 in 3rd place. The Cavs won the decisive doubles game in 1st place Ryan Seggerman And Casey Kania.
After leading 1-0 with the colon, Virginia then swept over Kittay in 6th place in singles games in 4th place Heinrich Lieberman and No. 1 over Seggerman to complete the 4-0 win.
The Tar Heels will return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. at Virginia Tech.
