Valley High School tennis champion goes to Harvard

Between and outside the white lines, Claire Gu “wins” by not thinking about “win”. ‘ Gu said. And she’s earned a state title. That mentality carries over into the classroom, as Gu is set to enter Harvard University next fall. Like the winner she is, Gu is now a four-time All-State Violinist. “I found that I really loved making music, and the more difficult the music got, the more I found it really enjoyable,” said Gu. “I found it relaxing, a kind of outlet away from tennis and academics.” With enough achievements to last a lifetime, Gu said she won’t be playing Harvard tennis next fall. The state tennis tournament will be her last ride.

“Last year when I went to the state, I just wanted to play tennis that makes me happy and not focus too much on winning or losing,” Gu said.

And she earned a state title.

That mentality carries over into the classroom, as Gu is set to enter Harvard University next fall.

Like the winner she is, Gu is now a four-time All-State Violinist.

“I found that I really loved making music, and the more difficult the music got, the more I found it really enjoyable,” said Gu. “I found it relaxing, a kind of valve away from tennis and academics.”

With enough accomplishments to last a lifetime, Gu said she won’t be playing Harvard tennis next fall.

The state tennis tournament will be her last ride.
