With just over a month earlier The Umbrella Academy is returning to Netflix for its third season, the streamer has finally unveiled the full trailer for the new episodes, which you can find in the player below! The full trailer offers us many clues about the new season and its plot. After wrapping up with the cliffhanger of The Sparrow Academy and the return of their sibling Ben, the trailer reveals that when they arrived in 2019 they created a time paradox and as a result created a “ball lightning” that, like you have guessed it will arise, the world will end if nothing is done. Of course, the new season trailer also includes a taste of a character’s return and a great toe-tapping song. Check it out in the player below.

However, the most interesting thing about this new season of The Umbrella Academy is that it is now firmly in a place where it has moved beyond the plot of the Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá comics (possible spoilers for the comics to follow!). Volume 3 of the series corresponded to the conclusion of the show’s second season, meaning readers will see the showdown between the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy in live action before reading it in print. Series showrunner Steve Blackman previously discussed the possibility of this happening in an interview with ComicBook.com, revealing that while the show and the comics share DNA, they are still entirely their own beasts and apparently have their own ideas for conclusions in mind.

“First of all, I’m very close to Gerard and Gabriel, so I propose to them in season, before I do, let them know what I’m doing,” Blackman said in 2020. “They’re very nice and they’re telling me.” , where they’re going in the next few volumes, and you know, the two mediums kind of overlap now, sometimes they look at something I’m doing and say we should put that in the graphic novel and they’re like, well, why don’t you do that on the show we accept they’re different things but we love it when we can find those crossovers but I have a good sense of where they’re going, I have an idea where I want to go and we’re kind of working together to get to that happy place. But I don’t want to get ahead of them. I love what they’re doing. So hopefully when it’s time out, it never will be.”

Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min and Colm Feore return leading the cast. Starring as The Sparrow Academy are newcomers Justin Cornwell (Training Day) as Marcus, Britne Oldford (Free Guy) as Fei, Jake Epstein (Designated Survivor) as Alphonso, Genesis Rodriguez (Big Hero 6) as Sloane, and Cazzie David (Eighty-Six) as jayme

The third season of The Umbrella Academy will premiere on June 22nd, almost two years after the second season debuted on the service. Netflix’s official description for the new seasons is as follows:

After putting an end to the 1963 doomsday, the Umbrella Academy returns to the present, confident that they prevented the initial apocalypse and repaired this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) the way they left them. Enter Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a fierce duel that proves to be the least of everyone’s worries. They must face challenges, losses and surprises of their own – and deal with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the universe (something they may have caused) – now all they have to do is convince Dad’s new, and possibly better, family to join them to help make amends for what their arrival did wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or will this new world reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?
