Tom Hanks has responded to negative reviews and critics who have “ripped up” his debut novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece.
The book is titled The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece and will be released on May 9, 2023.
In a new interview with the BBC on Tuesday, Tom addressed the critics and said their reaction was “not fair”.
He was “uncompromising” and knows the book “will live and die based on its own ability to entertain and enlighten an audience”.
Hanks also said his “day job as a movie star” means he can “handle” any criticism. He added: ‘[I’ve become] stronger when it comes to getting really ripped’.

According to the synopsis, the book is based on “a wildly ambitious story about the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action movie and the humble comic book that inspired it all.”
Many critics were unimpressed by the novel, with David Sexton in The Sunday Times describing the book as “Hanks Mansplains Movie Making” while branding the writing “clunky”.
The Observer’s Tim Adams said, “The book captures the humdrum of Hollywood but lacks the ability on screen to bring the characters to life.”
Alexandra Jacobs of the New York Times wrote, “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, a whimsical chronicle of the making of a Marvel-style film, is drowned in a tide of detail.”
Tom is one of the most successful actors of his time with hit films like Sleepless In Seattle, Saving Private Ryan and Elvis under his belt. His next is Pinocchio.
Included in the book are comics written by Hanks.
It’s about the movie business and the making of a “colossal, star-studded, multi-million dollar superhero action film and the humble comic book that inspired it,” according to the official synopsis.
There are many of his own life lessons in the novel.
“Each character in the book does something that I experienced while making a movie, discovered a philosophy, or learned an important lesson. Even the silly moments are some kind of stunt I pulled or a mistake I survived,” he shared with the site.
“The source for a film can go back as many years as there are in history. A story revolves around a single moment in someone’s life, then all the anecdotes of the current day magnify that moment,” Hanks explained.
“Going back to 1947 makes sense, just as it would have started in, say, 1559. Human longing has proven to be timeless.
“Nobody knows how a film is made – although everyone thinks they know,” he added. “I’ve done a lot of films (and four of them are pretty good I think) and I’m still amazed at how films come together. From a flickering idea to the flickering image on screen, the whole process is a miracle.”
The star is an “extremely difficult” male actor. There’s also a “wonderful” leading lady.
And of course an “eccentric” director.
