The 2023 Oscars nominations came and went without paying the slightest attention to Tom Cruise and his performance Top Gun: Maverick. The 2022 action film was nominated in the Best Picture categories for both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, but Cruise is yet to be nominated for Best Actor. What gives?
Many have expressed this cruise and top gun cannot be separated and calls the film a star vehicle for the actor. After the Oscar nominations, journalist Max Weiss tweeted, “I will say that. If you want to nominate Top Gun: Maverick For best picture you have to nominate Tom Cruise. He is the whole. He’s the top gun AND the maverick. He is the film and the film is him.”
Very valid point. John Serba of Decider wrote in his review of Top Gun: Maverick: “Cruise is very much in his sweet spot here, charismatic and always so slightly reserved, even looking a bit his age as the character of this place and time demands. You’re never gonna take the movie star away from this guy.”
And cruises top gun Costar Jennifer Connelly would agree. Earlier this week she shared diversity, “He is extraordinary. He does a great job in the film. He’s exceptional as a person and fantastic as an actor, and I think he’s just perfect.”
Discussing Cruise’s Oscar potential, she added, “He embodies this character so beautifully, and I think he totally deserves it.”
She went on to praise the relationship Cruise’s Navy Pilot character has with the others, particularly Miles Teller’s character, Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, who Connelly described as “beautiful and moving.” Connelly also mentioned “the work he did to achieve those flight sequences”.
Top Gun: Maverick comes 30 years after the original film and brings back Cruise as the character of the same name, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The pilot “must confront the ghosts of his past” as he begins training a group of graduate students and his former friend’s son, Lt. Bradshaw, hits. The synopsis teases, “Bitter rivalries are ignited as the pilots prepare for a special mission that will require the ultimate sacrifice of the chosen ones.”
The film was the second highest-grossing film of 2022, grossing over $1.4 billion at the global box office. Top Gun: Maverick held the top spot until December, when he was eclipsed by James Cameron Avatar: The Way of Water.
At the Oscars 2023 Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for six awards including Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Editing and Best Visual Effects. The action flick competes for the best film Everything everywhere at once, nothing new in the West, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees by Inisherin, elvis, The Fabelmans, tar, triangle of sadnessand women speak.
