Colombia, SC – South Carolina men’s tennis junior Connor Thomson was named SEC Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Thomson was perfect over the weekend, going 3-0 in both doubles and singles and helping South Carolina start the season 3-0.
Thomson, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, began his weekend of action with the double in South Carolina’s first doubles of the season against Charlotte. He then went on to take the team’s first single point, allowing the Gamecocks to beat the 49ers 7-0.
Against The Citadel, Thomson won his doubles match and then secured the overall title with a 6-0, 6-2 win from the No. 1 position in singles. The win marks his second career win from the top spot in the lineup.
Thomson’s most notable performance of the weekend came when he picked up the winning point to help No. 9 South Carolina defeat No. 18 North Carolina for the first time since 2003. Thomson led the team, providing energy and leadership to lead South Carolina from bottom-3 to a 4-3 match win over the Tar Heels.
After falling 1-3 in the overall game. The junior rallied players on adjacent courts to victory while also scoring his own victory over the nation’s No. 9 Ryan Seggerman.
Thomson lost his first set 4-6 but ran away with the second 6-2 to level the match. With the momentum on his side, the Scot fought back to take the final set 6-4, giving South Carolina the win.
Thomson’s win over the nation’s ninth-ranked player is the highest ranking win of his career. The junior had a previous career-best ranking win of 10th place that came just two weeks ago at the Miami Spring Invite, where he defeated Georgia’s Phillip Henning. Thomson is now on a seven-game singles win streak dating back to tournament play and is 5-2 against ranked opponents this season.
