Colorado is without a doubt one of the most photogenic and impressive states in America. The mountains here are majestic and humble, and people travel from all over the world to explore them. One of the best ways to do this is by hiking the trails that traverse these stunning vistas. And while there are endless trails worth experiencing, there is one trail that is easy enough for almost everyone. It’s also one of the most scenic hikes in Colorado.
At an elevation of 8,690 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park you’ll find the beautiful Sprague Lake Trail. This easy trail is just under a mile long and is mostly flat with virtually no elevation gain, yet offers some of the most breathtaking views in the entire park.
The parking lot entrance is south of Glacier Creek and about two miles south of the Hollowell turnoff in Rocky Mountain National Park. There is ample parking, but try to get there on a weekday morning to minimize the crowds.
As you first descend the wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, you will cross a small stream where you may even see small fish swimming in the water. You will then come to a fork in the road where you can either turn right or left, and both options will take you in a loop around this beautiful lake.
On any bright and sunny day in the park you will find sparkling, crystal clear water and a breathtaking mountain backdrop. Take your time meandering this gentle, flat trail and enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds you.
On summer afternoons, storms can gather over the mountains, creating a dramatic mood that tempts photographers to capture these incredible vistas. Pack only a raincoat and extra layers, as weather conditions in the Rocky Mountains can change quickly.
If you are lucky (and very careful) you may even see moose along this trail. They are very territorial creatures, so if you spot one, be sure to keep a very safe distance and never cut them off. This is their natural habitat and they should be able to exist peacefully without human disturbance.
The Sprague Lake Trail is breathtaking, especially in winter. If this trail is snowy, you can wear micro spikes or even snowshoes to traverse it. As always, be aware of the conditions and always be prepared with plenty of layers and water. But it’s worth the hike for the breathtaking views.
It’s no secret that Rocky Mountain National Park is a safe haven for diverse wildlife. Moose are found throughout the park and are just as majestic and fierce as moose; Please also keep a safe distance and respect their natural surroundings. If you encounter them during the autumn rutting season, their majestic calls echo throughout the valley in the late afternoon and evening. It’s really magical.
There’s nothing quite like seeing Hallet Peak and Flattop Mountain covered in snow in winter. This view from the Sprague Lake Trail is particularly amazing in the morning hours, so photographers should scout out the best spots for sunrise, as the sun kisses the peaks of peaks. But even in the midday sun, these snow-capped peaks are breathtaking.
