Attention rebellious children! Netflix’s upcoming film adaptation directed by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly Matilda The Musical won’t be in theaters until December, but you can listen to its soundtrack when it releases digitally on November 18, with a CD release to follow on December 9. The film musical will be released in theaters on December 9th and a limited edition streaming release on Netflix on December 25th. The film’s world premiere opens the BFI London Film Festival on October 5th.

Based on the 1988 children’s novel by Roald Dahl, the film stars Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull and newcomer Alisha Weir in the title role, along with Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, Sindhu Vee as Mrs. Phelps, and Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr .and Mrs. Vermouth.

Matilda The Musical follows Matilda Wormwood, a curious young girl with shady and absent parents who is encouraged by her inspirational teacher, Miss Honey. Matilda’s excitement at attending Crunchem Hall is dampened by the discovery that the school is an oppressive place run by the evil Miss Trunchbull.

The Tony and Olivier-winning theatrical production was adapted for the screen by Dennis Kelly, the musical’s book author, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. After directing both the West End and Broadway productions, Tony winner Matthew Warchus returned to direct the Netflix film. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing, and The Roald Dahl Story Company’s Jon Finn and Luke Kelly.

The stage musical has been performed on stages in New York City, New Zealand, Korea, Toronto and London’s West End, where it opened in 2011 and continues to run.
