Niantic, the company behind the hit game Pokémon Go, is delving into the world of sports for its latest creation.

The San Francisco-based software company is partnering with the NBA and the NBA Players Association to launch NBA All-World, a new mobile game that will bring the NBA world to neighborhoods worldwide, according to an NBA press release.

This new free augmented reality game allows players to find, challenge and compete against current NBA players in their communities. Players can also recruit an NBA player to their team before proving themselves on the court, the NBA said in a press release.

“Sport is a huge part of people’s lives and a huge part of pop culture,” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, in a press release. “Our take on an NBA basketball game starts with exciting one-on-one gameplay and expands from there to include key elements of basketball culture, including music, fashion, sneakers and more, all integrated into real-world locations.”

Players can outfit their teams in the mobile game with the latest gear by searching for real-world drops from different clothing brands. And, according to the NBA, players can show off their teams and interact with friends in-game and compete in one-on-one tournaments to win exclusive in-game items.

Adrienne O’Keeffe, the NBA’s vice president for global partnerships, said the league and Niantic began discussing a collaboration about five years ago, shortly after Pokémon Go launched in 2016, according to Niantic.

“They came to us at about the same time we were thinking of them,” O’Keeffe said in a statement. “It was clear from our first meeting that we saw where this could lead and since then we’ve been working on the game and preparing for this moment.”

NBA All-World is available now on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
