The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special Breakdown & Easter Eggs

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special is the second Marvel Studios Special Presentation Film and is streaming now on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia.

The synopsis is:

In The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the Guardians, on a mission to make Christmas unforgettable for Quill, descend on Earth in search of the perfect gift. The Marvel Studios Special Presentation stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff with Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn and The Old 97’s with Michael Rooker and Kevin Bacon.

An animated throwback to when Yondu was alive and Star-Lord was just a kid

Surprisingly, The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special begins with a short animated sequence that takes place when Yondu is still alive and Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is just a kid. Apparently, Peter teaches Yondu everything about Christmas.

It sounds like Michael Rooker has returned to reprise his role and voice Yondu. The credits confirm it.

Cosmo speaks for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Cosmo The Dog appeared in the Guardians Of The Galaxy 2014 credits, but he/she never spoke. In the comics, he/she is a telepathic/telekinetic dog with a Russian accent whose origins are actually a canine cosmonaut on Earth.

This is the first time we’ve seen Cosmo use her telepathic and telekinetic abilities in the MCU. She is voiced by none other than Maria Bakalova, best known for starring in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020) and Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022).

After Avengers Endgame and Thor Love And Thunder, the Guardians are now helping to rebuild Knowhere

So this is what the Guardians are up to now. If you don’t remember, Thanos destroyed Knowhere in Avengers Infinity War 2018 in his quest for the Infinity Stones.

Drax and Mantis go to Earth to find Kevin Bacon

Just like the trailers teased, Drax and Mantis go to Earth to find Kevin Bacon and bring him to Peter to cheer him up on Christmas since they haven’t found Gamora yet.

A reference to Kevin Bacon’s first feature film role

After kidnapping Kevin Bacon, did they ask him about his past “feats of exploits”, including as Mantis puts it, “when you fought and defeated superpowered masked killer Jason Vorhees in the woods”?

This is actually a nod to Kevin Bacon’s first-ever feature film role, which was a supporting character killed by an arrow through the neck in 1980’s Friday the 13th, the first in the horror franchise.

If you haven’t seen this before, check it out below, it’s an iconic horror movie slasher kill in pop culture:

A DC Easter egg that’s interesting given recent events

Yes, that’s an obvious Batman DC Comics Easter egg for everyone to catch. The interesting thing, though, is that by the time The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special releases, James Gunn will already be Co-CEO and Co-CEO of DC Studios.

Nebula gives Bucky’s arm to Rocket

This is a fun little throwback to when Rocket asked Bucky “How much is the arm?” in Avengers Infinity War 2018. Rocket later says, “Oh, I’ll get that arm”.

Four years later, he finally does.

Yondu gave Star-Lord his elemental weapons for Christmas

That’s heartwarming.

Mantis reveals that she is Peter’s sister

Mantis reveals that Ego was also her father and that she is actually Peter’s half-sister.

Post-credits scene

There’s a post-credits scene, but as expected it’s just another prank scene with Rocket and Cosmo lighting Groot up Christmas lights. It ends with Rocket saying, “Now we’ve got to have another special,” which is probably a joke, or it could mean another Guardians Of The Galaxy special is in the works. Who knows?

That’s it folks, see you next Excelsior!
