But according to close friend and film programmer Adam Cook, part of Mr. Srinivasan’s enthusiasm was because he knew life could end at any moment. When he was two years old, Mr Srinivasan lost his father Thiruven. (At 21 he lost his mother Larraine to the same thing that would eventually kill him.)
“He had a tough upbringing because he didn’t have his father, and he was also raised as a colored person in a very white town,” says Mr. Cook. “That can make you someone who is cautious and not trusting, but he went the opposite way. He accepted everything with love and warmth.”
Adds Vivian Belik, Mr. Srinivasan’s friend and programmer at TIFF’s Cinematheque, “He was someone who was able to hold space for people. He held this candle for those who had gone through their own struggles.”
As he grew up, Mr. Srinivasan’s brother Hari took on the role of father figure.
“I’m 11 years older, so he started out as my little brother and then slowly became my best friend,” says Hari, who sometimes used Ravi as a kind of mascot, putting him on Dickie Dee’s ice cream truck he would bike around in the summer. “We struggled a lot growing up, it was hard for a single mom to raise the two of us but we leaned on each other.”

After studying Film and English at Wilfrid Laurier University, Mr. Srinivasan enrolled in a postgraduate program in Film and Television at Sheridan College. While trying to get an internship to meet Sheridan’s needs, the cinephile – armed with a passion for film but without a single industry contact – grabbed a copy of the TIFF program guide to cold call dozens of producers and production houses. So he phoned the producer Jennifer Jonas, who runs New Real Films with Leonard Farlinger.
“He had this great energy right from the start, he was sincere and a quick learner,” Ms. Jonas recalls. “And then Gravestock poached him!”
In fact, Mr. Srinivasan was hired by the TIFF team in 2013 after spending some time reconciling work with New Real and a night gig with the Canadian Opera Company call center.
“He had an infectious enthusiasm that can wane over the years, but that didn’t happen with Ravi,” says Mr. Gravestock. “If he liked a film, he fought for it. Tracey Deers beans is one that stands out. And he was the first to see Anthony Shims Riceboy is sleeping, which won this year’s Platform Award. He was anticipating trends and could always predict what TIFF’s Canadian judges would pick, which irritated me because I’ve been doing it four times as long and he was way better at it.”
After joining TIFF, Mr. Srinivasan traveled to festivals around the world, discovering new cinematic voices and dominating karaoke bars along the way.
“We took the stage at this random bar in Cannes where, without exaggeration, we brought down the house with our famous Linkin Park duet Finally‘ recalled Mr Cook. “I was Mike Shinoda, he was Chester Bennington. But he had quite a range.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Srinivasan continued to expand his social circle, to the point where even Ms. Belik – who Ravi met at a Hot Docs party in 2019 – was always amazed to discover new people he was friends with .
“We went to a party and I asked him, ‘How do you even remember everyone?'”
Programming for TIFF can be a tiring experience as Mr. Srinivasan screens more than 300 films each season. But somehow he also found the time to start his own film festival, the South Western International Film Festival (SWIFF), which was launched in 2015.
“His mission was to bring a culturally diverse experience to Sarnia, he wanted to push the boundaries of people,” says Tom Colquhoun, a childhood friend who has remained close to Mr Srinivasan since they met at the age of five had. “It was important to him to take this experience home with him.”
Since SWIFF’s inaugural edition, the festival has grown to include live concerts, virtual reality exhibitions and a lively industry summit alongside its series of feature and short films.
“Ravi was like the mayor of Sarnia,” says friend and former TIFF programmer Kiva Reardon. “And he convinced a lot of Toronto film people to go there by cramming the four of us into a room at the Holiday Inn. Some people grow up and move away and never want to think about where they come from, but Ravi wanted to make Sarnia a place he would have loved to have grown up in.”
After helping finalize the schedule for TIFF last September – its first fully personal edition after two years in pandemic-era hybrid mode – Mr. Srinivasan had the pleasure of watching one of his selections, the Pakistani film joy land, convince the festival audience. And thanks to the platform TIFF provided, director Saim Sadiq’s drama about a young man’s relationship with a trans woman was shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film at this year’s Academy Awards – the first time a Pakistani film has been received such an honor.
“Ravi was such an experienced viewer and such a passionate advocate that he was able to articulate both the formal qualities that made it interesting and why it was important,” says Mr. Bailey of TIFF. “Institutions like ours and others can do a lot to change conversations, but you need someone like Ravi to champion that and speak to audiences about it too.”
Ms. Belik was with Mr. Srinivasan when he saw it joy land for the first time last spring in Cannes.
“He never cried during movies or otherwise, but he just broke down at the end,” she says. “He was proud to be able to bring him to TIFF and then see him shortlisted for an Oscar. It was a beautiful moment.”
Mr. Srinivasan’s death came just under two weeks before TIFF launched its Canada’s Top Ten 2022 series, a program he was heavily involved in organizing.
“This is an unfathomable loss to the Canadian cinema community,” says Cook. “Film meant a lot to him personally. But with Ravi, everything was personal.”
Every good relationship is built on trust. It gives us the security to open up and be honest with our friends, significant other or spouse. Chances are, one of you might not feel like working on the relationship immediately. And someone else might be impatient to regain trust quickly. The more patient, empathetic, understanding, and determined you are, the better chance you have of restoring love and trust to one another.

What does it mean to trust someone?
In a serious relationship, trust means that you feel safe and secure and that you are respected both physically and emotionally. There is no doubt that your spouse has your back. Communication is strong as each person listens to the other and understands the true feelings and needs that are being shared. You can be vulnerable together and not feel the need to hide anything.
It also means that you don’t feel the need to check or spy on the other person. It is not necessary if you trust the other person to have integrity and honesty. There’s no need to keep secrets, and there’s no need to assume the worst of the other person.
When there is full trust, a relationship is at its healthiest.

8 steps to restore trust in a relationship
1. Get to the root of the betrayal
The first step is to find out why you have been scammed or lied to. It is important to understand the cause or motive in order to start working to fix the problem. Honesty is key here. Really listen to each other’s feelings and needs.
That doesn’t mean what your partner did is okay, but it might at least provide some understanding. It could also clear up any misunderstandings or misunderstandings that may have occurred.
It will be important to address the issues between the two of you without getting defensive. Being defensive looks a lot like lying. So get rid of your pride and take an honest look at yourself before you answer.
Once you know the reason you were lied to, you can decide whether or not you want to stay in the relationship and commit to working on it (although it will be a slow process).
2. Offer real apologies
After a betrayal or any kind of injury, quick forgiveness and forgetfulness should not be expected for either party. Deciding to devote yourself to the work of restoring trust is a big step, but the pain will remain.
Having simply discussed what happened, it is necessary to sincerely apologize and be accountable. After all, it’s not only up to the person who was hurt to forgive and “move on,” but it’s also up to the person who caused the pain to act heartily in their actions — knowing it will take time to prove yourself worthy to trust again.
A big step would be to articulate the knowledge of the pain caused, the regret you felt, and the determination you felt to make things right — no matter how long a process gets — and to state that you know it will take time will do something to earn their trust back.

3. Reflect
As you work through the act of forgiveness (if only it were as easy as pressing a button!), you spend time thinking not only about what happened, but how you are processing it all at the time. Prioritize journaling or meditation to better align with your emotions, reactions, and needs.
4. Practice vulnerability
This means being honest about your feelings and needs. You have to be open about what’s going on in your head without fear of rejection. Don’t say anything just to please the other person, instead learn to speak your true feelings.
This can also mean humiliating yourself and admitting mistakes and apologizing for them. Being vulnerable will only bring you both closer. You may not always agree, but treating each other with respect will go a long way to rebuilding trust.

5. Work on deeper issues
This leads back to the reasons for the betrayal. To prevent the same thing from happening later, it’s important that everyone works on what drives their behavior. If it can’t be fixed on your own, it may be time to enlist the help of a consultant.
6. Gain Confidence in “The Little Things”
Rebuild trust by keeping promises or even admitting small mishaps before they’re discovered, or instead of pretending they never happened. If you say you will do something, make sure you do it. Stay honest and supportive of your partner and keep the communication going. As Nick Matiash, a men’s life and relationship coach, says, “Consistency is your best friend when trying to rebuild trust. Trust is built on consistent actions, words and behavior.”
7. Allow time to heal
Give each person as much time as they need to sort out their feelings and emotions. Be patient with each other and keep communication open. Healing happens at a different rate for everyone – that’s normal and that’s okay.
8. Rekindle the relationship
Start over and get back into the dating phase of a relationship. Learn to enjoy each other’s company again and do things that interest you both. Make sure you have quiet conversations and listen to each other, and work together to create plans for the future while aligning your goals as individuals and as a team.
