LAPEER — With the first-ever Lapeer Summer Musical Theater Camp set to begin next month, the Youth Enrichment Camp is already receiving a lot of support from the community.

Two Lapeer-area community organizations, the Kiwanis Club of Lapeer and the Lapeer Optimists Club, each donated $1,500 towards scholarships for campers, joining a roster of local supporters of the inaugural camp.

Lapeer Summer Musical Theater Camp is an intensive three-week camp for students in Grades 7 through 12, led by industry professionals, where they learn and practice the skills of singing, dancing and acting – all culminating in a full production of ” Seussical the Musical.”

The Kiwanis Club of Lapeer and the Lapeer Optimist Club join existing sponsors at the Lapeer Community Schools, View Newspaper Group and the camp’s official caterers, Vinyl Bar and Grill and EG Nick’s.

According to Tony Stroh, director of Stone’s Throw Theater and organizer of the camp, it’s “inspiring” to see the community support for the camp. “I am continually amazed and awed by the generosity of our local charities who continue to support programs that enrich the lives of our children,” he said.

Stroh said there was still time to register for the camp, which begins Monday, July 11 through Friday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will spend two weeks learning music, memorizing lines, blocking and learning musical theater choreography, all in preparation for the final tech week before Saturday and Sunday 30th and 31st July at 2:00 p.m. Two performances of “Seussical” will be presented to the public. Tickets for the Seussical performances are available for $10.

The camp fee is $250 for the three week experience, with lunch provided each day. Students are expected to attend each day of camp and “have an appreciation for achievement and fun,” Stroh said. All skill levels are accepted. Auditions are not required.

The first two full weeks of camp will be held at Lapeer Community Schools’ Center for Innovation on Millville Road, where campers will focus on music, linework, choreography and team building skills. The third week of camp will then move to Lapeer High School, where the performances of “Seussical” will also take place.
