Despite a lack of news on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 since December, voice actor Tony Todd has apparently passed his release month
After several months of radio silence, the release month of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 exclusive may have been brought forward thanks to one of the game’s voice actors.
The catwalk for PS5 exclusive games is looking a bit dry at the moment. Sure, PlayStation absolutely dominated 2022, with big AAA exclusives like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok both earning critical acclaim. But aside from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we have no real idea of what this year will bring to first-party studios.
That’s all changed somewhat now thanks to Tony Todd, the voice actor set to play Spider-Man villain Venom in Insomniac’s upcoming superhero sequel, and apparently breaking the embargo. In response to a fan on Twitter, he said — in a now-deleted tweet — that Spider-Man 2’s release month “looks like September.” The VGC news outlet has since confirmed their plans for the same release window.
Alongside the alleged confirmation of Spider-Man 2’s release month, Todd said he expects “massive publicity in August” to build hype for the game. “Commercials start dropping in August, I’m told. Hold on tight… and hold your breath! Will be necessary,” he added.
Insomniac announced plans to release Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in fall 2023 in a PlayStation Blog post back in December. If Todd’s recent comments are to be believed, Insomniac has massively shifted its timeline in the months since, leaving us wondering whether or not Sony has an equally massive first-party PS5 exclusive planned for later in the year.
Just keep swinging
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is easily one of my most anticipated AAA games of the year. Because while Xbox has also set a September date for Starfield, I have no doubt that Bethesda’s ambitious RPG will suffer from more than a few teething problems at launch – judging by the studio’s previous releases. In comparison, Insomniac has a great track record of releasing polished games. Couple that with the fact that it’s already released two amazing Spider-Man games (see what I did there) and there’s no reason to doubt that the upcoming sequel will be awesome.
However, with the rumored release of Spider-Man 2 in September, my thoughts immediately go to what PlayStation has planned for PS5 later in the year. Leaving the November/December holiday season barren would be suicidal, and yet there’s still no word on which first-party franchise will be hitting the plate next after Spider-Man 2.
We’ll likely find out more about what PlayStation has planned for late 2023 in some sort of summer show, but I doubt it’ll be anything related to The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, or Uncharted. If there’s a big PS5 exclusive this holiday, I’m hoping for a Ghost of Tsushima sequel, as developer Sucker Punch hasn’t heard from it in a while.
