Shazam! wrath of the gods Director David F. Sandberg makes a candid confession when he claims he knew the anticipated DCU sequel would not live up to expectations.
On Reddit, Sandberg responded to a comment on a post about wrath of the gods‘ was a stunning early return at the box office following its March 17 release. The Helmer Shazam! Continuation revealed he saw the disappointing results from a mile away. “It’s not like that comes as a surprise. I saw where this was going a long time ago,” he said. “But I’m fine. I got all my money paid in advance.”
Shazam! Fury of the Gods cinema debut
Sandberg’s teasing ahead of time comes after reports surfaced that Fury of the Gods grossed $30 million at the box office in the US and Canada. The figure not only fell below the initial domestic projections of $35 million, but was far less than what Shazam!, which premiered in 2019, earned $53.5 million in ticket sales from its opening. That means wrath of the gods opening grossed 44% less than its predecessor.
There were signs before that wrath of the gods had its theatrical premiere that it would struggle for success Shazam! enjoyed. First, early reviews of wrath of the gods was mixed at best, with some critics saying it was devoid of intrigue and lacked clout with its storytelling. Additionally, there were rumors of DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn adding scenes, as well as major reshoots that took place after he and Peter Safran took over the studio last October, though Sandberg denied those claims. At the moment, wrath of the gods has a critical rating of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it also has a much more respectable audience rating of 85% on the review aggregator website.
wrath of the gods has also had to deal with negative press surrounding star Zachary Levi after the actor’s social media activities plunged him into hot water. He blasted pharmaceutical maker Pfizer in a tweet in January, although it wasn’t clear if his comments were directed against their vaccine or something else. Additionally, he posted a satirical article on his Instagram story that appeared to mock pop legend Britney Spears’ fight for the conservatorship, prompting condemnation from corners of social media.
Levi plays along wrath of the gods alongside an ensemble cast consisting of Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, Rachel Zegler, Meagan Good, Faithe Herman and more. The film sees Levi and the Shazamily take on the Daughters of Atlas (Mirren, Liu, and Zegler) as they invade Earth to recover magic stolen long ago while threatening to use a weapon that the could destroy earth.
