San Diego Comic Con 2022 Spotlight: Loungefly’s Derrick and Liz

Take a moment and think of the Loungefly brand. what did you come up with A favorite backpack that you carry every day or the one you have on your wish list? The Loungefly brand has become a popular way for fans to show off their fan base, and we had the opportunity to interview Derrick Baca, VP of Business, and Liz De Silva about the brand’s origins and mission statement.

Fantha Tracks: She and Derrick are the face of the Loungefly brand, customers know you very well from social media. Tell us a little bit about the history of the brand.

lounge fly: We started in 1998 with brands like Universal, Warner Brothers and Hello Kitty. We’ve increased overtime and grown a lot over the past four years thanks to our relationship with Funko.

Fantha Tracks: Initially, many people thought Loungefly was a women-centric brand, but now you can see that everyone wears backpacks. Was that your intention all along?

lounge fly: Yes, we wanted to move towards a unisex feel and include more sizing. Anyone who collected Loungefly before 2019 might have had some short straps and difficulty carrying all of the bags, so we wanted to make sure there was a permanent fit and all of our straps so we could truly offer a size to everyone. Next year we’ll be announcing a lot of really exciting things, but it’s definitely geared towards making sure we’re catering to a larger audience.

We are also expanding into retailers with full size backpacks at these retailers especially at this time of year when you see like all school backpacks. You’ll start to see a lot of Loungefly in the retail stores that carry the larger backpacks.

Fantha Tracks: They’re definitely becoming a lifestyle brand, and social media seems to be a big part of that.

lounge fly: Yes, you see the Instagram videos of fans showing, for example, walking around Disneyland, whole families including the father and children. I just love to see the brand resonate across generations, we love that and we want to keep moving in that direction.

Fantha Tracks: Let’s talk a little about how to choose specific lines for production. Does it start with a personal passion? For example, The High Republic Backpack debuting as an SDCC exclusive.

lounge fly: Yes. Derrick is a big fan of The High Republic and so did I, and no one was making any goods at the time, so we reached out to them.

Fantha Tracks: The first bag based on Keeve Trennis debuts here, but will be available to everyone, right?

lounge fly: Yes, it is now available on our website.

Fantha Tracks: The look of your product is something that really stands out on the shelves. Tell me about the choice of artists for the products.

lounge fly: We’re really picky when we hire. Loungefly is a family and everyone is very passionate about their work. I feel like the fans know if it’s authentic. I feel like one High Republic Fan would know if the people behind the products didn’t know what they were doing. It feels authentic because we have artists and team members who are fans of everything.

We have people who are obsessed with Pokemon and people who are obsessed with anime and Disney. When we’re deciding who’s going to work on the project, it’s really important that I don’t let anyone work on the project who hasn’t seen the film. I’ll say stop it, watch it now. I want people to really see what fans love about this property.

Fantha Tracks: Where do you choose the artists/designers from? Is there a way fans can find out which specific artists designed which products?

lounge fly: Our social and marketing team have started sharing this information. You will see our behind the bags series and video interviews where the artists talk about their experiences making the bags and I think you can learn something about them that way. I try to share on my personal social networks. Some of them want to be shared more than others and some of them are private, but for those who want to be shared as a brand, we’re working to give them some publicity. We find artists everywhere. Here at the con tomorrow we will be spending some time in Artist Alley. I’ve seen art at Disneyland and found and hired artists.

I met and hired artists at Designer Con. Sometimes I’m scrolling through Instagram and I see an amazing piece of art and I’ll track that person down. They may be in the Dominican Republic or not available for full-time employment, but I will do contract work with them, so we’re very open to finding talent anywhere.

Fantha Tracks: It really feels like you’re both mind readers at times, you’re very connected to what’s popular and your fans’ passions. If the public has made a suggestion about a line, what is the best way to express it?

lounge fly: Contact our social team with suggestions and ideas. We read the comments all the time so say you are a war of stars fan and they post about the latest bag and there’s a character we haven’t done yet or a shirt you think would be awesome. The comments on the post are the best way to get in touch with us.

We really try to give everyone what they are looking for. Eventually everyone arrives. We are always open to unconventional ideas and new collaborations.

Derrick and Liz were such a delight! keep an eye out Loungefly Socials for upcoming reveals from your favorite fandoms.
