Ron Howard’s Thai cave rescue film Thirteen Lives goes to Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime Will Collaborate To Release Ron Howard’s Next, Thirteen Lives, rather than the film going for a wide theatrical release. The film was previously slated to hit theaters this fall on November 18, delayed from an April 2022 release. However, plans for the film have changed after Amazon sold MGM two months earlier in an $8.45 billion dollar deal.

Corresponding The playlist, Thirteen Lives will get a limited theatrical release this summer, followed by a worldwide streaming release on Amazon Prime. The decision was made based on Amazon’s new events strategy for summer releases and hints at Amazon’s future bidding for its newly acquired properties through MGM. Also, with the change in the decision on dismissal Thirteen Lives will revert to its previous summer release schedule. Amazon will now release the film after a brief theatrical run in August 2022.

Over the past two years, Amazon has released several original films and television productions direct-to-stream, in part due to the disruption to theaters during the pandemic. During this time, changing people’s consumption habits allowed streaming platforms like Prime to schedule the production of original content that audiences could access directly on the web. The day-and-date release of HBO Max was also an aspect of the shift in global content consumption. Also, now that Amazon Prime Day is approaching, Thirteen Lives could find a slot for release that day on the platform.

Now that Amazon has several other MGM properties, audiences can see ones like that James Bond franchise going to Prime Video soon and many more getting an overhaul. There’s no telling if Amazon will use all MGM productions as Prime Video exclusives or entertain wide theatrical releases for some of them, but the platform will be populated with a new set of stories very soon.


Thirteen Lives Bring the heroic rescue mission to life

Thirteen Lives is based on the rescue mission of twelve teenagers and their assistant coach trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Thailand. The team had entered the cave for a soccer practice session and were trapped after heavy rain blocked the way out. After eighteen days, the stranded members were rescued by a group of divers on a challenging extraction mission.

While a group of British and Thai divers undertook the dangerous mission, they also received immense help and technical advice from around the world through public and private sector entities and organizations. This drew worldwide attention to the incident over the past three weeks.

William Nicholson, famous for writing Howard’s Oscar-winning film Gladiator (2000), wrote the film.
