Redwood Valley Earns Victory Over Fairmont Tennis | News, Sports, Jobs

REDWOOD FALLS — Fairmont singles player Sebastian Castro and doubles tandem of Anthony Stegge and Tyler Slama denied host Redwood Valley a win over both brackets during a 5-2 Big South Conference duals tennis meet on Tuesday.

Sebastian Castro earned a straight win over Yzykiel Rendon in solo play at number 4 on the lineup. Castro delivered a 6-3 decision in the first set before delivering a 6-2 win for Fairmont in the second segment.

Slama and Stegge converted a super tiebreaker win that served as the deciding factor in lieu of a full third set in doubles second against Redwood Valley’s Zack Lundeen and Sam Klabunde. Slama and Stegge earned a 7-6 tiebreak in the first set with a 7-3 decision before Lundeen and Klabunde countered by winning the second set with a 6-3 decision.

Slama and Stegge saved the team’s tally by defeating Lundeen and Klabunde with a 12-10 tiebreak decision.

Fairmont’s Jack Hagen and Redwood Valley’s Andrew Muetzel went head-to-head on the first few singles. Muetzel beat Hagen 7-6 (7-3) in a tiebreak in the opening set before Hagen regrouped and responded with a 6-2 triumph in the second set to force a third segment. Muetzel prevailed in the super tiebreaker with 10:8.

Wylee Frederiksen and Simone Castro also left the courts at Redwood Falls with third doubles wins, but narrowly passed Ben Jorgenson and Brianna Tucker. Frederiksen and Castro combined for a 6-3 win in the first set before Jorgenson and Tucker countered with a 7-6 win in the second set based on an 11-9 tiebreak score. The Redwood Valley tandem then went for a 10-7 win in the super tiebreaker to earn the point.

Redwood Valley’s Joe Davilla and Evan Cooper delivered a 7-5, 6-4 win over Olivia Ortega and Carter Quist in the first doubles match, while Redwood Valley’s second singles netter Cole Johnson duplicated Davilla and Cooper’s winning decision. Johnson scored a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Fairmont’s Dominick Lund-May.

Kanyon Hicks rounded out Redwood Valley’s winning streak with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Noah Vetter in third place

The Fairmont will host the Blue Earth Area on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
