LA CROSSE (WKBT) – The Muse Theater didn’t take long to find a seat to land after announcing on Monday it was closing its curtain.
The longtime North Side Theater will be moving to the Cavalier Theater and Lounge in downtown La Crosse, the Cavalier announced on its Facebook page on Wednesday.
“The expense of running a small independent theater and trying to survive the sh—show Rona has dumped on small businesses made The Muse a victim,” the Cavalier’s announcement read.
“Rather than pouring one for our dead homies during their grieving period, we’re opening our doors to allow their extravagant, raunchy, bawdy, over-the-top, loud live productions to continue entertaining,” reads the Cavalier ad.
“It’s a no brainer for us. Vicki Elwood has been one of our greatest champions since day one and has always been kind and supportive. She’s been speaking to us about the situation for months, and as our stage has a 45-year history of performing plays ingrained in its bones before we took it on, there really couldn’t be a better passer,” the Facebook post said .
Cavalier owner Jason LaCourse promised, “Besides her theatrical weirdness, we’ll be persuading Vicki to regularly perform burlesque, cabarets, drag shows and other cheesy sass while we focus on our concerts.”
The Muse, founded by Vicki and Don Elwood, expressed optimism when it announced its closure on Facebook Monday, with a post that read, in part, “Sometimes you’re happy and sometimes you’re sad, but the world goes by. Sometimes you lose every nickel you had, but the world keeps turning. Sometimes your dreams fall into pieces, but that doesn’t change anything. Believe me, there will always be a summer, a winter, a fall and a spring.”
The post continues, “Sometimes a friend starts treating you badly, but the world keeps turning. And sometimes your heart breaks with a deafening sound! Someone loses, someone wins. One day it’s kicks, then it’s kicks in the shins. But the planet spins and the world spins. And round and round and round and round!”
And so it goes, The Muse will keep turning and turning in the Cavalier.
