According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released Wednesday, Pfizer and Moderna’s Omicron boosters reduced the risk of mild disease in XBB family subvariants compared to people who didn’t receive the vaccine.

The CDC study provides the first estimate of the real-world effectiveness of the Omicron shots versus the XBB family of subvariants. Some scientists have warned that the XBB subvariants could cause another Covid wave because they are so good at evading the antibodies that block infection.

US health officials want to make COVID-19 shots more like the annual flu shot.

Illinois Reports Decline in COVID Cases as ‘Kraken’ Variant Spreads in Midwest

Despite the rise in cases of the more contagious COVID-19 variant “Kraken” in the Midwest, Illinois has seen a fairly significant drop in new COVID cases over the past week, as well as improvements in overall community-level status.

A total of 28 counties in Illinois had elevated COVID statuses as of Friday, compared with 56 counties with either “moderate” or “high” status a week earlier, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
