Noah Schnapp, Victoria Justice and Garrett Hedlund quickly met while filming the new thriller the tutor.

Hedlund, 38, agreed with his co-star’s assessment, citing the production’s decision to film the tutor‘s most intense moments first “such a revelation and a barometer of what you’re dancing and sparring with on screen.”

“Like Noah said, you become so vulnerable, but you also see the courage in the other person,” says the actor. “And when you get into tricky scenes like this right off the bat, you see where everyone is bringing their fearless play right on day one and bringing their vulnerable play right on day one.

“It inspires you as an actor and inspires pretty much everyone to be on their toes and come prepared and ready to play,” he adds.

the tutor follows Hedlund as “a sought-after tutor for the East Coast money elite” who, according to an official synopsis, takes a job tutoring Jackson, the son of a billionaire, on the grounds of his family’s “remote New York waterfront estate.”

“Almost immediately, Ethan realizes that his student’s interest in his life borders on obsession,” reads the synopsis. As tensions between tutor and student grow, Jackson begins making false allegations of physical violence against Ethan and threatens to “reveal Ethan’s perceived dark secrets to his girlfriend and to the authorities.”

“I think it took a lot of trust just to jump in at the deep end like that,” Justice, 30, told PEOPLE about the shoot the tutorThe most intense moments of “And for me, I was a little bit nervous. But I think, especially after those big scenes got swept out of the way, there was a kind of relief.”

Hedlund adds that “it was so wonderful to go on this journey with his co-stars.”

“And the scenes were so organic, spontaneous, and they improvised at such wonderful moments, which gave them a wonderful fluidity and a sense of humanity and life that was relatable,” he adds. “That’s refreshing for what is a psychological drama or psychological thriller of this nature.”
