The Sun Devils did most of their par 4 damage for the tournament, posting a 3.97 scoring average as a team going 5-under. They were one of three teams to shoot into the red on the par 4s.
“We had a great opportunity and we couldn’t convert it. The birdies dried up when we needed them most Matt Thurmond called. “The bright spot is that we were once again at the top. We just have to learn how to get it across the finish line.”
Summerhays (66-71-70=207/-2) had 13 birdies over the course of the tournament, including a 3.90 scoring average on the par 4, and went 3-under, which was fifth best in the field. His top 5 finish is his second straight and tenth top 10 finish of the year.
“Preston played another solid tournament. Consecutive top five finishes in these tournaments is really impressive,” said the assistant head coach Thomas Sutton specified.”
Mjaaseth carded the lowest round for the Sun Devils on Saturday, shooting a 3-under 69 to place himself in the top-20 after shooting 5-under 31 in the front nine, including three birdies and an Eagle to jump up the leaderboard. Senior Gabriel Salvanera, competing as a singles player, shot 3-under 69 to level him with four birdies and an Eagle of his own.
student in the first year Luke Potter (72-71-71=214/-2) fired consecutive rounds with an undershoot, 71 and sunk 13 birdies for the tournament, finishing fifth on the week and finishing T-27. Josele Ballester (68-77-70=215/-1) rebounded from his second round, improved seven shots and ended up in the red with four birdies in his final round, where he caught up with teammate Ryggs Johnson (71-71-73= 215/-1), who also finished the tournament 1-under and finished 37th.
The Sun Devils allowed every golfer to finish at least once for the tournament inclusive Kiko Coelho Card a 2-under (73-71-70=214/-2) starting as an individual with three birdies a day and finishing T-27.
The spring season continues for the Sun Devils at the Valspar Invitational in West Palm Beach, Florida. a two-day event on March 27-28.
