Nicole Abelar’s 66 leads women’s golf

SADDLEBROOKE, ARIZONA. – University of Houston Women’s Golf Junior Nicole Abel scored a bogey-free 66 at MountainView Golf Club on Saturday afternoon to lead the Cougars in the second round of the MountainView Collegiate.
Abelar was one of four Cougars to shoot equal or better on the 6,352-yard, par-72 course. student in the first year Alexa Saldana finished her second straight round of sub-par with a 71 on Saturday and tied for 13thth at 3-under 141. Freshman Moa Schwedenskiold scored a 69 in the second round and was tied for 26th at 143.
Freshman Natalie Saint German was tied for 68th at 148 as a super senior Annie Kim was tied for 73approx at 149 after I even shot par 72 on Saturday.
Houston fired the second-lowest team round of the day with a score of 10-under 278 and moved up to sixth place with a 36-hole total of 569.
Abelar started her second round from No. 10, shagging each of her first two holes and never moving out of the red for the rest of the day. After nine straight pars, she alternated birdies and pars on each hole, beginning with a birdie on the third par-5 hole for the remainder of the round.
Saldana suffered a bogey early in her second round in 14th place but returned to the even level with a birdie in 4th place and moved into the red and stayed there with consecutive birdies in 5th-6th place.
Svedenskiold overcame a slow start on Saturday that saw them finish 13-14 with back-to-back bogeys. Fortunately, the Halmstad native of Sweden bounced back quickly with three birdies on her next four holes and moved under par.
After a bogey on November 4th brought them back to even levels, Svedenskiold shagged her last three holes to finish with a 69 and went into a tie for 26th.
The state of Iowa led after the second round with 545 points. Ohio State was second with 560, with TCU (563), San Jose State (564), and Tulsa (565) rounding out the top 5. Nebraska (570), North Texas (571), UNLV (573) and New Mexico (574) completed the top 10.
Iowa State’s Karisa Chuk-ak-sorn scored a 62 in the second round to lead 17-under 127 individually. TCU’s Caitlin Macnab placed second with 134, while Ohio State’s Caitlyn McGinty placed third with 135.
The three-day, 54-hole event concludes with the final round beginning Sunday at 10:00 am CDT.
