New data reveals North Texas’ most congested roads – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Traffic is a sign that an area is booming economically, but it can also be extremely frustrating for residents and commuters. In a recent report from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a major highway in Dallas took first place. 2 among the most congested roads in the state of Texas.
Woodall Rodgers Freeway from US Highway 75 to North Beckley Ave ranked second overall in Texas and first in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area.
Research from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute shows delays on Texas roads are increasing — but still lagging behind pre-COVID numbers.
The institute says the study measures congestion by determining the deceleration per mile of travel – how much longer it takes for motorists to drive on a paved road than to make the same journey in congestion-free conditions.
“Traffic congestion isn’t just a problem in big cities, and this problem will almost certainly get worse as our population increases by almost 20 million over the next 25 years,” says David Wardrobe, lead researcher at TTI for the annual study. “With this kind of growth, Texas needs to use whatever means it can to keep people and goods moving. We need to increase capacity, run the system efficiently and provide people with travel options.”
Researchers say these strategies require rapid road construction, an approach the Texas Department of Transportation is taking as part of its Texas Clear Lanes initiative.

TTI has conducted annual surveys of the state’s busiest stretches of road and highway since 2009. The analysis, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, found that the ranking changed little from 2020 to 2021.
Researchers say eight of the 10 most congested stretches of road have remained in the top ten over the past three years, stressing that traffic will eventually return to known levels if the state’s population grows and its economy remains strong.
TxDOT is fighting traffic blockages for Texas drivers nationwide and has already planned projects for some of the congested spots.
