Netflix’s Heartstopper Season 2 & 3 Extended in Rare Double Season Pickup
In a highly unusual move for Netflix, the streamer is renewing its LGBTQ+ teen romance series Heartstopper for seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously.
Netflix has renewed Heartstopper Season 2 and Season 3 in a rare double-season pickup. The show was written by Alice Oseman, who also wrote the series of graphic novels on which it is based. The graphic novels were originally published in webcomic form in 2016, followed by a Kickstarter print run in 2018 that was fully funded two hours after its launch. heart stopper follows the story of two British teenagers studying at Truham Grammar School: Charlie Spring, who was recently outed against his will, and Nick Nelson, a rugby player who is his classmate and eventually develops feelings for him. heart stopper Season 1 premiered on April 22, 2022
heart stopper, became an instant hit for the streaming service with its combination of live-action teen drama and traditionally animated design elements that highlight the strongest emotional moments shared by the characters. The show currently has an average of 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 98% from audiences, and remains in the Netflix Top 10 English Language Series for three straight weeks. In Season 1 of the series, Kit Connor plays Nick and Joe Locke plays Charlie. They are joined by an ensemble cast that includes William Gao, Corinna Brown, Yasmin Finney, Stephen Fry in a singing performance as the Headmaster, and Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman as Nick’s mother.
Per meetinggave Netflix heart stopper a two-season order that will extend the series for seasons 2 and 3 in one fell swoop. Oseman will return to write both seasons, which do not yet have official release dates. This move is likely due to the fact that the series’ popularity far exceeds its low budget, so Netflix won’t take a huge financial risk even if the second season sees a significant drop in viewership.
The source material certainly offers a lot of room for heart stopper grow. Season 1 of the series only adapted the first and second volumes of the graphic novel, in which Charlie and Nick meet and begin to develop their bond. The ongoing graphic novel series is expected to conclude with its fifth volume in February 2023. So it’s quite probable heart stopper Season 2 includes Volumes 3 and 4, while Season 3 concludes the printed story.
because heart stopper is inherently self-contained, it makes sense for Netflix to break with tradition and promise two seasons. That way, they can turn the five volumes into a proper trilogy, tell the entire story to the end, and give Oseman enough time to release this final volume before Season 3 premieres. That way, if they feel like the show has run its course at this point, they already have a solid ending point for the series, but if it continues to be successful, they can just go from there and create new stories in the universe from narrating the show into a fourth season.
