Netflix to remain #1 SVOD service globally into 2027 – Media Play News

Netflix has raked in its share of hits this year, including consecutive fiscal quarters of subscriber losses in the United States. Digital TV Research forecasts that the subscription streaming video pioneer will continue its reign as the largest SVOD platform through 2027.

The UK-based research firm says global SVOD subscriptions are expected to grow by 475 million to 1.68 billion from 2021 to 2027. The growth will be led by six US-based streaming platforms, which will account for 47% of global market share in 2027.

Analyst Simon Murray said the company has revised down Disney’s SVOD partial growth forecast by 67 million to 274 million, which should beat Netflix’s 253 million. Murray reconfigured estimates after Disney+ Hotstar failed to retain India Premier League cricket rights, losing to Paramount+.

“SVOD revenue for Disney+ will reach $15 billion by 2027,” Murray said in a statement. “Although we have lowered our projections, Disney+ revenue in 2027 will be in line with our previous projection. ARPU and revenue will increase in key markets after the platform introduces the hybrid AVOD/SVOD tier and the more expensive pure SVOD tier.”

Netflix will also remain the revenue winner, with an expected $30 billion by 2027 — similar to Disney+, HBO Max, and Paramount+ combined. Global SVOD sales are expected to reach $132 billion by 2027.
