Native Illinois native with more than 2 decades of international and domestic law enforcement experience, selected to lead HSI Chicago

CHICAGO – R. Sean Fitzgerald has been appointed Special Agent (SAC) in charge of the Chicago Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) area of ​​operations. A native of Illinois, Fitzgerald, who also served as HSI Chicago’s Deputy SAC, brings a wealth of experience from international and domestic operations to his new role.

He began his federal police career in 2002 as a special agent in Chicago and in 2010 he moved to the Office of International Affairs and served as the HSI Representative to the HSI Attaché in Mexico City. During this deployment, Fitzgerald focused primarily on cross-border crime related to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Fitzgerald retired from the HSI Attaché in Mexico City in 2012 and returned home to HSI Chicago as Group Leader of the Financial Investigations Group. After three years in that role, he became Operations Manager at HSI Domestic Operations at HSI’s Washington, DC headquarters. Fitzgerald then moved into other roles within Domestic Operations, including Special Assistant to the Assistant Assistant Director and Assistant Director Operations.

In 2017, Fitzgerald was promoted to Assistant Special Agent for HSI Chicago. The department he oversaw included the Chicago Narcotics Group, the Undercover Operations Group, and the Financial Investigations Group. During his tenure, he also assumed leadership of the Human Trafficking Group and the Organized Crime Drugs Task Force Group.

In his new role, Fitzgerald will lead HSI Chicago’s Senior Leadership Team and oversee investigative, analytical and administrative activities across HSI Chicago’s area of ​​responsibility, which includes five offices and two posts across Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Sean earned a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement and justice administration from Western Illinois University in 1998 and was selected to be a member of the Senior Executive Service.

HSI is a directorate of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responsible for investigating cross-border crime and threats, particularly those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, Finance travel and relocation.
