Mustangs sweep, Dow beats MHS in tennis
Meridian’s Katie Chinavare had a big day on the plate on Tuesday as the Mustangs defeated Shepherd 6-5, 9-2 in Jack Pine Conference Softball.
In the opener, Chinavare’s RBI double with two outs late in the seventh inning gave the Mustangs a walkoff win.
Kami Linton clinched the victory in the circle, going the distance and giving up three earned runs with 10 hits and a walk while striking out six.
McKenna Matzke homered and doubled, drove in two carries and scored two for Meridian while Sydney Crowder went 2-on-3 with a run batted, Chinavare had two hits and an RBI, Grace Chinavare had two hits and scored two and Kendal Holzinger doubled and drove on the run.
Linton notched another complete game win in the nightcap, giving up no earned runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Katie Chinavare went 3-on-4 with two doubles and four RBIs while Matzke hit four, Crowder drove in two carries and Grace Chinavare hit twice.
The Mustangs (19-9 overall, 6-2 JPC) will host Thursday’s pinconning.
CHARGERS DOWN CHEMICALS IN TENNIS
Dow High defeated rivals Midland High 7-1 in girls’ tennis in the Saginaw Valley League on Tuesday.
The Chargers won the singles games when Dalton DeBoer defeated Riley Penwell 6-0, 6-0 on the first flight; Saumya Somasi defeated Brooklyn Moore 6-1, 6-1 in the second flight; Ayesha Middha defeated Avery Miller 6-1, 6-0 in the third flight; and Tessa Wood beat Tega Kamatoy 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth flight.
In doubles for Dow, Emelia Ingalla and Maggie Nelson defeated Emma Buschlen and Ale Brenes in the first flight 3-6, 6-4, 6-1; Elisa Costeux and Norah Lacher defeated Cheryl Fritz and Emily Northrup 6-2, 6-2 in the second flight; and Sachi Togashi and Lauren Yao defeated Chloe Nieto and Payton Palmer 6-0, 6-0 in the third flight.
The Chemics win came in fourth place in doubles, where Lauren Swanson and Lindsey Deckrow beat Evie Price and Hope Ridley 6-1, 7-5.
MIDLAND GIRLS WIN SVL TRACK TRIANGULAR
The Midland High girls won a Saginaw Valley League track and field triangle against Bay City Western and Saginaw Arthur Hill on Tuesday, while the Chemics boys finished second.
On the girls’ side, Midland had 101 points, BCW 59, and the Lumberjacks 14. On the boys’ side, the Warriors had 85 points, the Chemics 73, and Arthur Hill 17.

COLEMAN WINS BIG AGAINST ASHLEY
Coleman twice defeated Ashley 21-0 in three innings in Mid-State Activities Conference softball on Tuesday.
Maddy Miller won the first game by going all three innings and allowing one hit with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Nevaeh Chaffee went 4-on-4 with a home run and a double, seven runs hit and three runs scored for the Comets, while Miller went 4-on-4 with a home run, a triple and two doubles, three RBIs and three runs .
Ava Gross went 3-on-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Brooklynn Lattimer went 2-on-2 with two RBIs and two goals.
Miller threw three perfect innings and fanned out all nine batters she faced to earn the win in game two.
Gross went 3-on-3 with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored while Miller went 2-on-3 with a double and three RBIs and scored twice, Lattimer drove in three runs and Autumn Hess drove in two runs.
Coleman (14-5 overall, 11-1 MSAC) will travel to St. Charles on Thursday.
CBA SOCCER CRUISES VS. HOLY HEART
Calvary Baptist Academy defeated Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 7-1 in girls’ soccer on Tuesday, improving to 7-3-0 this season.
Sadie Day scored two goals for the Kings while Ila Tomko had one goal and three assists. Calvary scored all seven goals in the second half.
Lillian Rachwitz, Allison Barker, Natalie Schmidt and Amanda Wiggins each scored once for CBA while Charlie Theaker had an assist. Kings goaltender Emma Schmidt made nine saves to earn the win.
“We struggled to finish in the first half, missing five or six chances. We woke up when Sacred Heart scored in the first five minutes of the second half,” said CBA coach Eric Lewis. “Once the girls found success, they came alive and played selfless, crisp football.
“Sacred Heart played hard and had a few chances but Emma had a solid game at the net tonight,” he added. “We want to keep that momentum going as we prepare for the districts over the next few weeks.”
FLYING G’S WIN BIG AGAINST FARWELL
Gladwin defeated Farwell 13-0, 15-0 in Jack Pine Conference baseball on Tuesday.
Seth Mead clinched the win in game one, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing one hit and no walks while striking out six.
Lucas Mead went 4-on-4 with two home runs for the Flying G’s while Lincoln McKinnon also hit two home runs and Trace Corlew hit two including one home run.
Connor Ritchie clinched the win in game two by playing three innings without success and leading out eight.
Brady Gehrett went 2-on-2 with three runs batted while Lucas Mead went 2-on-2 and scored three goals.
Gladwin (17-3-1 on aggregate, 6-0 JPC) will travel to Beaverton on Thursday.
GLADWIN SOFTBALL MERCIES EAGLES TWICE
Gladwin defeated Farwell 10-0, 11-0, both in five innings, in Jack Pine Conference softball on Tuesday.
Delaney Conley won game one, walking all five innings and allowing one hit and three walks while striking 11.
Maddie Cantrell had two hits and three runs for the Flying G’s, while Erin Breault went 2-on-3 with two RBIs, Maelen Guzman went 2-on-3 with one RBI and scored two goals, Conley doubled and drove in two runs, and Sadie Schuler went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Tessa Cameron clinched the win in game two, going the distance and allowing two hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Breault went 2-on-2 with two RBIs and hit twice, while Brianna Worden went 2-on-3 with two RBIs, Conley went 2-on-3 with one RBI and hit twice, Cantrell doubled and drove in two runs, and Skylar Davey also had two RBIs.
Gladwin (15-8 overall) will travel to Shepherd next Tuesday.
