Men’s tennis starts spring break with a 7-2 win

HILTON HEAD, SC – The Union College men’s tennis team got off to a strong start to spring break on Sunday morning, beating Millikin University 7-2 at the Van der Meer Tennis Center.

Senior Aidan O’Brien and second graders Ben Jacobs And Jan Schunk were all doubles winners for Union (2-4) on the day as the team won all three doubles matches and then won four of the six singles competitions to emerge victorious.

Jacobs and Jr Dimitris Binopoulos Union started the day well in the first double with an 8:4 victory over Martin Cardestig and Hasting Bjorkman. O’Brien scored his first win of the day soon after, along with his second team Seth Prusko for an 8-5 second double win over Clayton Maack and Theodor Wolf. Schunk and Junior Bailey McAtee then cleaned up and passed Cole Phillips and Rodrigo Laux 8-7 (7-5) in the third flight.

After Millikin (5-2) scored his first point of the day in the third singles, O’Brien capped his Sunday win with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Wolf in the fourth singles to put Union on a victory point. The team didn’t have to wait long to secure the crucial fifth point and Jacobs followed shortly thereafter by completing his 6-4, 6-1 win over Cardestig in the second singles.

Schunk and Senior Thomas McGuire finished the day with two more wins. Schunk picked up his second win of the day in the fifth singles by beating Phillips for the second time 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) with a tiebreak in the second set. McGuire capped the win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laux in the sixth singles.

Union will continue their spring break plan with a matchup against the College of Wooster tomorrow morning.
