MONTGOMERY – Fresh from their first win of the season, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team is back in action at the Huntsville Toyota Walden Invitational, which begins Monday in Walden at the Lake Conroe Golf Course.
The 54-hole event features 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday, with play starting with the first groups teeing off at 7:54 am
Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Course is 6,756 yards long and has a par of 72.
The competition
There will be a 14-team field that includes UTRGV, Sam Houston, Rice, Stetson, Louisiana Monroe, North Alabama, Tarleton, New Orleans, Incarnate Word, Houston Christian, Central Michigan, Nicholls, Texas A&M-Commerce and Midland Persons from Texas Tech, Houston, Texas A&M and Baylor.

The Vaqueros recorded their first win of the season and their first since 2021 when they won the Big Texan at Riverhill Country Club. The win was also UTRGV Head Coach Houston Moore‘s first career win.
UTRGV won the event with a three-round score of 873 and a two-shot win over Southeastern Louisiana. The. Vaqueros opened with a first round 296 and then used a second round 284 to climb to third place after day one. UTRGV then posted a final lap of 293 which was the best lap of the day to claim the win.
Javier Neira Garcia placed ninth with a three-round score of 216 after posting rounds of 74, 69, and 73. Garcia shagged his 54thth hole to ensure victory for the vaqueros.
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque ended in a tie for 10th with a three-round score of 217 after posting rounds of 75, 70, and 72. Taj Sutherland ended in a tie for 16th with a three-round score of 219 after carding rounds of 74, 73, and 72.
Henry Wang ended in a tie for 27th with a three-round score of 222 with rounds of 73, 73, and 76. Leonardo novella And Carlos Roldoswho played as a singles player finished the game tied with 33approx with three-round scores of 224. Novella scored rounds of 75, 72, and 77, while Roldos scored rounds of 73, 76, and 75.

The Vaqueros finished 16thth Place last year at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic in Walden at the Lake Conroe Golf Course.
UTRGV achieved a score of 940 over three rounds with rounds of 322, 314, and 304.
Leonardo novella led UTRGV with a three-round score of 234 when he finished with 58 pointsth with rounds of 80, 77, and 77. Taj Sutherland ended in a tie for 70th with a three-round score of 238 with rounds of 80, 82, and 76.
Sebastian Lundberg ended in a tie for 83approx with a three-round total of 244 after rounds of 83, 84 and 77. Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi ended in a tie for 86th with a three-round score of 246 with rounds of 79, 80 and 87 and Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque 94 finishedth.
Florida Atlantic won the teams title with a three-round score of 876 with rounds of 303, 284, and 289. Florida Atlantic’s Alex Maguire won the singles title with a three-round score of 213 with rounds of 69, 70, and 74.
