Men’s basketball starts home weekend against Coastal Carolina

  • After a road split last weekend, James Madison’s men’s basketball returns to the Atlantic Union Bank Center for Thursday night’s game against Coastal Carolina. The tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
  • JMU fell to Southern Miss Saturday 83-70 as the Golden Eagles had 23 assists from 32 shots, the most assists by a JMU opponent this season. This was only the second double-digit loss for the Dukes this season, the other being then-No. 1 oz.
  • 4-4 in league play, JMU is two games behind first place in a tightly packed Sun Belt Conference. A total of 11 teams are within three games in first place shared by Marshall, Southern Miss and Louisiana.
  • Red shirt sophomore Terence Edwards scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds against Southern Miss. Edwards has at least 15 points in 11 games this year, including five of his last six.
  • With 48.4% from the field, the JMU shoots the 23rd best team clip in the country. Red shirt sophomore Justin Amadi and graduate student Meze Offurum shooting .650 and .628, respectively, both top 20 marks in Division I. After shooting just .223 from the three-point line in their first five Sun Belt games, JMU has gone from strength to strength in their last three games improved from deep to .391 made 27 triples.
  • Red Shirt Junior Vado Morse leads JMU with 13.0 points per game after scoring 25 each in back-to-back games against Georgia Southern and Troy. Morse, Edwards (12.3), Takal Molson (11.0) and Offurum (10.4) are all in double digits as JMU is one of only three teams in the SBC with at least four double digit scorers in 2022-23.
  • Coming to the line recently, the Dukes have made more free throws and attempts than all eight of their opponents in SBC play to date. JMU has made 50 more free throws and 56 more attempts than their opponents in league games.
  • After adding six steals to their total against Southern Miss, the Dukes have amassed 10.7 steals per game, the second-highest in the nation.
  • The Dukes have six home games left, tied with App State for the second-highest conference home tilts remaining in the league.

Scout out the CHANTICLEERS

  • Coastal Carolina is .500 in both aggregate and league play this season, tied with JMU in two games from firsts in the SBC.
  • The Chanticleers came off a 74-70 home setback against nonconference opponents Chicago State on Monday. CCU won its last two league games, 93-84 against App State and 85-81 in overtime against South Alabama, both at home.
  • Among players who have completed all 20 games, center Estam Mostafa leads the Chants with 13.5 points per game.
  • Coastal averages 72.5 points per game in league play, ranking third in the Sun Belt.


  • The Dukes won the only meeting between the two teams, 110-95 on January 8, 1987 in Harrisonburg.

  • Fans are encouraged to wear black to Thursday’s game – JMU students may arrive early to receive a Black Out t-shirt giveaway – the first 250 students in attendance will receive a t-shirt.
  • Thursday is also Greek Night at the Atlantic Union Bank Center – students who are members of Greek organizations can check in at the marketing desks and the organization with the highest attendance wins a catered menu from the Potbelly Sandwich Shop at their next chapter meeting.
