Nintendo has released new sales figures for its Switch games, at least two of which are among the highest-grossing video games of all time.

Unlike the movie industry, video game companies generally don’t like it when someone knows exactly how well they did. Sometimes, when my game is doing exceptionally well, sales figures are released, but usually only randomly, in occasional financial reports.

Coincidentally, however, today there were two separate announcements regarding Horizon Forbidden West and the best-selling Nintendo games. The former came as developer Guerrilla Games is celebrating its 20th anniversary, which revealed the latest entry has sold over 8.4 million copies.

Nintendo’s reveal is part of its year-end financial report, which isn’t great overall, but shows how incredibly well its best-selling titles are doing, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now hitting 53.79 million lifetime sales.

The best-selling traditional console game of all time is Grand Theft Auto 5 with 175 million sales across three generations of hardware. Next up is Wii Sports at 82.9 million, but that doesn’t really count because it was a bundled release everywhere except Japan.

After PUBG comes Mario Kart 8, and when you combine it with sales of the original Wii U version, it’s actually more than 60 million, making it Nintendo’s highest-grossing non-bundled game of all time.

There are many complications, however, with Minecraft outselling even GTA 5 (and Roblox outselling that, if you count that as a game at all) and whether mobile apps like Tetris should be counted.

You can see the other best-selling games on the Switch above, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons trailing far behind at 42.21 million, although it’s a newer title and still ranks in Nintendo’s all-time top 10.
