Man wanted for alleged involvement in deadly shooting 4-year-old arrested after lengthy search
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (TCD) — A 22-year-old man has been arrested after spending nearly two years on the run for allegedly playing a role in the shooting death of a 4-year-old boy during a robbery.
On January 21, the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force announced that agents located and arrested Andre McCoy at a home on the 1100 block of Parkhill Drive in Youngstown. He was arrested on felony homicide, attempted homicide, felony assault and aggravated burglary in connection with the death of Rowan Sweeney and the injury of four others. The US Marshals said all charges will have firearms specifications.
Court records show McCoy faces a total of 13 charges and is being held without bail in the Mahoning County Jail.
The statement alleges that Brandon Crump, 18, and Kimonie Bryant, 26, also played a role in the September 21, 2020 robbery and shooting at Sweeney’s mother’s home.
WKBN-TV reports that Sweeney’s mother’s boyfriend, Yarnell Green, had a large amount of cash around the house from cashing COVID-19 stimulus checks. McCoy went inside and allegedly texted Bryant that he saw the money. According to reports, one person entered the house, opened fire and stole the cash.
Sweeney’s mother, Alexis Schneider, Green and McCoy were all injured in the shooting.
Prosecutors reportedly argued Crump, one of the other suspects, captured video of “a large amount of cash in denominations consistent with the cash Green had on the table at the time of the shooting.”
Bryant reportedly turned himself in after the shooting, and US Marshals said agents arrested Crump about a month later.
McCoy was reportedly hospitalized for his injuries but later disappeared. US Marshals said he has been wanted since his indictment in March 2021.
According to WKBN, Bryant and McCoy each face the death penalty if convicted. However, Crump is not eligible as he was a juvenile at the time of the shooting.
In his obituary, Rowan’s family described him as “full of spirit,” saying, “Though small in stature, he was a leader, not a follower.”
He loved superheroes like Spider-Man and Batman, played Fortnite and adored his little sister.
The obituary read: “He loved to cuddle people when they were sad and always found a way to make them happy, even giving them a handful of flowers he pulled from the garden. Rowan was taken from this world too soon and will forever be remembered for his infectious smile, sweet demeanor and love for life.”
