The dispatch received a call just after 3 p.m. Wednesday from a 60-year-old woman who had reported her arrival home and found her mother and father dead in their attached garage, according to a press release from the Clearfield City Police Department. The woman reportedly told the news outlet that she believes her son was responsible for the death and he is currently at the home.

According to KTVX, the son has been identified as Jeremy Belt, 26. Belt lived in his grandparents’ house in the basement.

Several authorities responded to the home and found both deceased, an 85-year-old woman and an 87-year-old man. Officers tried to help the couple, according to the CCPD, but their injuries “were beyond repair.” The woman was taken to safety and officers surrounded the house.

Belt reportedly called his mother, the woman who had called the switchboard. She allowed an officer to speak to him and the officer was able to take him out of the house, according to the CCPD. Belt was taken into custody.

According to a probable cause document obtained by KTVX, Belt reportedly told officers he was concerned his grandparents and other relatives had tried to harm him. Belt is also said to have admitted killing his grandparents.

According to a probable cause document obtained by KTVX, Belt allegedly confronted his grandparents inside the house and they then went to the garage to leave. Belt allegedly told them they couldn’t leave because he cut the wire to the garage door. Belt reportedly followed them into the garage and kicked both of them in the chest. Both fell to the ground. Belt then allegedly grabbed a hammer and smashed her car. Belt said he tried to get them to answer him, but then he allegedly hit them on the back of the head with a hammer.

Belt then allegedly ran inside to get his rifle, loaded it, and headed back to the garage. According to a probable cause document obtained by KTVX, Belt allegedly shot one of them in the head, then went back inside to get another bullet and shot the other in the head.

According to KTVX, CCPD reportedly found psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana in the home, along with a gun in Belt’s bedroom.

According to the CCPD, Belt has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of assault (domestic violence).

The investigations are ongoing. CCPD said it expects to release more information, including the names of those who died, on Monday. Additional fees may be added and will be determined by the outcome of the investigation and by the Davis County Attorney’s Office.
