The Frederick County Public Schools Tennis Championships will be played Wednesday through Friday this week.
Defending Class 3A champions Madison Warren (Thomas Johnson) and Nicholas Novitski (Oakdale) are the top seeds for both boys and girls No. 1 in the tournament, which was canceled last spring due to bad weather.
It was the first time in decades that the county tennis tournament had not been completed, outside of 2020, when all high school spring sports were wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week’s tournament starts on Wednesday at 15:30 with the play-in round. The boys will play at Urbana High School while the girls will play at Oakdale.
On Thursday, the tournament moves to Baker Park for the district quarterfinals and semifinals. Game start is scheduled for 9:00 am. Boys play on Second Street courts while girls play on Fleming Avenue courts.
These are the same seat assignments for Friday’s championship games, with play scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m
In addition to the No. 1 girls’ and boys’ singles, Urbana’s Lindsey Croghan in girls’ singles No. 2 and Claire Kim and Meredith Flynn in girls’ doubles No. 1, Brunswick’s Jacie Powell and Aveline Murphy in girls’ doubles No. 2 the top finishers, Annabelle Caruso and Heather Shawver in girls doubles No. 3 and Alexander Bobofchak and John Adams in boys doubles No. 2, Walkersville’s Sid Parandapalli in boys singles No. 2 and Evan Boledovic and Camdyn Meyer in boys doubles No. 3 and Middletown’s Giacomo and Giovanni Rossi in boys’ doubles No. 1.
St. John’s 13, Concordia Prep 3
Joe Novak and Alex Piraino each had four goals, while Gavin Prunty finished with three goals and three assists as the Vikings (8-4) finished their regular season.
Next, they host a MIAA C Conference Semifinals on Tuesday.
Other St. John’s leaders included Keller Neuman (two goals), Drake McGrath (two assists) and Nick Gamarra (two assists). Goalie Landon Kunkle made 12 saves.
Rockbridge Academy 15, MSD 6
Jayden Orsi-Pedersen accelerated the Orioles (2-8) with three hits and an RBI. Nathan Sheppeck added two hits and an RBI.
