Lions to quick start in the PCSC pentathlon

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The LMU women’s team opened its 2022-23 season Saturday at the PCSC pentathlon in Long Beach.

Swim team members chose one of three pentathlons in which to compete. The most popular event was the “sprint” pentathlon, which consisted of a 50-yard dash in each of the four strokes and a 100-meter cross-country run. Six Lions in the event’s top-12, led by Junior (Transfer) Maddie Nguyen, who was overall winner after recording the lowest overall time in the five races. Nguyen placed first overall in both the 50 Butterfly and 50 Back, and fourth in both the 50 Free and 100 IM. After Nguyen was junior Heidi Ly in third place, freshman Lia Murray in sixth place senior Kelly Andrade in ninth place, freshman Lauren Kim in the 11thth Place and runner-up Francis Dygean in 12thth Place.

Only two first-year students represented the LMU in the “Long Individual Medley” pentathlon Grace Hull Conquering eighth place in the 100 butterfly.

In the Freestyle Pentathlon, which consists of 25-yard, 50-yard, 100-yard, 200-yard, and 500-yard races, several Lions posted strong times early in the season and placed in each freestyle Top 10 events. Junior Abby Shaw finished fourth in the 25 meter sprint and seventh in the 100 meter race out of 74 competitors at the event. student in the first year Rei Sperry placed eighth in the 200 freestyle as a sophomore Natalie Hogenboom posted a strong preseason in the 500 Freestyle with a sixth place finish.

Due to some technical issues interfacing with a new Omega timing system in the pool, the full results are not yet available but will be posted upon receipt.

The Lions return to the water next Friday and Saturday in Pepperdine’s Rodionoff Invitational, where they will face WCC opponents Pepperdine and University of San Diego during the two-day competition.
