Why Reims can beat Marseille

Reims is eighth in Ligue 1, just above mid-table. With 43 points from 10 wins and 13 draws in 27 games, it looks like Reims can still survive in France’s top flight. The last foretaste of defeat came in February in the Coupe de France against Toulouse. Reims’ last Ligue 1 defeat was in September when AS Monaco gave them a 3-0 win.

In the last 23 official games, Reims had only lost twice. They currently have an active winning streak that includes victories over Troyes, Toulouse, Ajaccio and Monaco and a goalless draw against Nice. Reims’ last six Ligue 1 games have also ended without conceding. Reims have recorded a 7-4-2 record at home, which is the fifth-best mark in the league.

Belgium coach Will Still hopes Folarin Balogun continues his scoring streak. In 23 starts in 26 games played, he hit the back of the net 16 times. He has the third-best goal record, tied with Alexandre Lacazette Wissam Ben Yedder. Only Kylian Mbappe and Jonathan David are three goals ahead. Junya Ito, Marshall Munetsi and Alexis Flips also contributed to the 12 goals Reims scored this season. Jens Cajuste and Kamory Doumbia have four goal contributions for the team.

Stade de Reims are missing Noah Jean Holm and Myziane Maolida. It is questionable whether Emmanuel Agbadou will be there. Reims are hoping for positive results from a total of 13.8 shots, 4.1 corners and 1.3 goals that the team scores per game. On defense, the red-whites are hoping to match or better the club average of 19.4 tackles, 11.4 interceptions, 16.9 clearances and 3.1 saves. Reims also need to reduce their lost possession (141.6) and fouls (13.1) per game. Reims have been unbeaten in their last nine home games and they will ensure that that record is extended.

Why Marseille can beat Reims

Marseille’s title defense had some dysfunction from October to November 2022. However, OM responded well in 2023, losing only three times in all competitions. What is notable, however, is that they have done better away from home than at the velodrome and have set a 10-2-1 record on their travels, scoring 32 points of their 56 points. Marseille is now third in the French league with a record of 17-5-5.

Marseille lost their last game in February 3-0 against PSG and lost to Annecy FC on penalties, resulting in their exit from the Coupe de France. Marseille responded to those defeats by beating Stade Rennais 1-0. OM’s last game was a 2-2 draw with Strasbourg, the same result in their last clash way back in October.

As a team, Marseille have scored 51 goals, 29 with assists while 27 have been surrendered. They also average 14.3 shots, 8.2 successful dribbles, 5.6 corners and 1.9 goals per game. They average 55.5% possession in 27 games. Alexis Sanchez leads the squad with 10 goals while Jonathan Clauss has eight assists. Nuno Tavares and Cengiz Under each have six goal contributions. Sead Kolasinac, Jordan Veretout and Dimitri Payet follow closely behind with five goals each.

Manager Igor Tudor will be keen to factor this into his journey and extend his winning streak while playing eight straight games away. They have not conceded a goal in five of their last six away games. However, Amine Harit is out in this game while Leonardo Balerdi is suspended. Samuel Gigot was expected to return in defense with Sead Kolasinac and Chancel Mbemba. Alexis Sanchez, Cengiz Under and Ruslan Malinovskyi are all set to take on duties as well. Pau Lopez will continue as goalkeeper.

Final Reims-Marseille prediction and selection

Reims and Marseille will make this an interesting match. There will be no goals conceded in this game, but after their first meeting in August, Marseille feel they have a slightly better advantage than Reims. Bet on the visitors to get the league double against the hosts.

Final Reims-Marseille Prediction & Selection: Marseille (+135), Over 2.5 Goals (-114)
