Get ready to see Ladysmith back on TV.
cast and crew of Resident Foreigner were back in town last week to film the show’s third season in a variety of locations including along 1st Avenue where Barnacle Barney’s became the 59ers Bar and street banners were swapped to say Patience, Colorado.
It is where the comedy-drama TV series SYFY is set, in which the production transforms Vancouver Island’s Ladysmith into a fictional US mountain town.
“An alien crash lands on Earth and is forced to pose as small-town human doctor Harry Vanderspeigle,” reads the series synopsis.
“With a secret mission to kill everyone, Harry begins living a simple life… but things get a bit bumpy when he becomes involved in solving a local murder and realizes he must adjust to his new world. “
Resident Foreigner It stars Alan Tudyk as Vanderspeigle, Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees, Corey Reynolds as Sheriff Mike Thompson, and Alice Wetterlund as D’Arcy Bloom.
Film Commissioner Kathleen Gilbert of the Vancouver Island South Film and Media Commission says she’s happy the show’s producers have taken a liking to Ladysmith, especially as this year seems to be a less busy year for the local industry.
“It wasn’t outrageously slow, but probably a little slower than it’s been in recent years, and we’re not exactly sure what’s causing that,” Gilbert told CHEK News.
While the commission is forecasting about $50 million in “direct spend” this year, a number Gilbert calls “fairly significant,” it’s still not as much as 2021’s record-breaking $60 million.
According to the film commissioner, direct spend is the money that film and television producers spend locally, including at hotels, gas stations and restaurants.
“We’re expecting the summer and fall transition, I don’t think it’s going to be outrageously crowded, but it should be pretty stable,” she added. “It’s been a slow start to the year and we don’t know if the threat of a writers’ strike is to blame.”
Gilbert says another Hallmark film is also being shot in the South Island, as well as a TV series hauling over from Vancouver and another SYFY series. Reginald the Vampirewho is back in Victoria for her second season.
