Film Commissioner Kathleen Gilbert of the Vancouver Island South Film and Media Commission says she’s happy the show’s producers have taken a liking to Ladysmith, especially as this year seems to be a less busy year for the local industry.

“It wasn’t outrageously slow, but probably a little slower than it’s been in recent years, and we’re not exactly sure what’s causing that,” Gilbert told CHEK News.

While the commission is forecasting about $50 million in “direct spend” this year, a number Gilbert calls “fairly significant,” it’s still not as much as 2021’s record-breaking $60 million.

According to the film commissioner, direct spend is the money that film and television producers spend locally, including at hotels, gas stations and restaurants.

“We’re expecting the summer and fall transition, I don’t think it’s going to be outrageously crowded, but it should be pretty stable,” she added. “It’s been a slow start to the year and we don’t know if the threat of a writers’ strike is to blame.”

Gilbert says another Hallmark film is also being shot in the South Island, as well as a TV series hauling over from Vancouver and another SYFY series. Reginald the Vampirewho is back in Victoria for her second season.

In a blog post, SYFY Wire announces the upcoming season of Resident Foreigner will likely run eight episodes and debut later this year. In anticipation lOcal Ladysmith passers-by and groups have been taking to social media for the past few days posting photos of the cast and crew on set:
