[K-Exclusive]: Interview with Amber Liu + Henry gate crash
AMBER LIU is a talented singer, rapper and songwriter who rose to popularity as a member of K-pop girl group F(x). Amber is known for her unique voice and versatile rap skills.
This is Amber’s first performance in Australia at the SONICA Music Festival in Melbourne. In this interview we talked about what she’s looking forward to in Melbourne, making music and wildlife.
Amber, how are you? Welcome to Melbourne!
Amber: “Thanks dude it’s amazing, the city is amazing. I’ve been walking around with my team for the last 2 hours and we all just said, ‘wait can we go there, can we go there’, it’s beautiful. It’s hot here, it was so cold in LA. I played Pokémon (Pokémon GO), it was so great. I got a shiny today, do you know what shiny pokemon are? They’re rare, people who know, they know, but I have a shiny pokemon and I was really holding back like, ‘should I say I have a shiny pokemon, no, I have to say I have one Shiny Pokémon.”
What else are you looking forward to doing in Melbourne while you’re here?
Amber: “Apart from the performance we’re trying to plan our zoo tour, we have an escape room later tonight so we’ll do that too. We’ve had coffee before, I’ve heard Australian coffee is the best in the world, we had a couple of recipes for that. We had some amazing dim sum as soon as we landed. I’m trying to figure out where to walk to in the morning, I just want to explore. I really want to see a muscular kangaroo. Everyone on my team and I just say, “Let’s find a muscular kangaroo!”.
Congratulations on your new music. I think you will release a new song tomorrow (Friday March 17th).
Amber: “Yes! It’s called ‘No More Sad Songs’ and I’m really excited about it.”
Henry then crashed our interview –
Amber: “For some reason I knew he would, it’s just Henry.”
Can you explain to us your creative process when creating music?
Amber: “There can be many ways, typically producing it as a track, you send it to me, I can write down some ideas, send it back, kind of back and forth. It’s like the internet’s new way of doing things. Sometimes I just go to their studio and we write things from scratch, we’d say, ‘oh, how are you feeling?’ I say, ‘let’s do something scary’ and we do a lot of scary and scary, like Screamo and us experimenting with everything because I’ve been influenced by so many different genres, so it’s like “Amber is effervescent today?” Let’s write a really happy song.”
“Sometimes the shower is a great place to find inspiration. I spoke to someone else about this, it’s like the shower is the only place you can really just be alone, no phones, I don’t know how you can shower with your phone. shower thoughts A lot of my songs are written in the shower, probably the reason you don’t know is because a lot of them are really bad songs. Sometimes you just keep writing and writing, sometimes you revisit old demos from years ago and I dig it up again like, “Wait, that’s some kind of dope,” then you kind of hear it with new ears because sometimes you’re over certain songs .”
If you weren’t making music and you weren’t in the industry, what would you be?
Amber: “I think my answer at the time was that I wanted to be a scientist, something in biology or environmental science. I think at the moment I still have a lot of passion for the environment and science, but for animals. I want to do a dog shelter someday, animals are just so innocent, they have their cycle, let’s just do our part to help with that.”
You also have your own zoo at home, you have your dogs and your bird.
Amber: “Bird oh yeah I haven’t seen a cockatoo yet. I have to find a cockatoo. This is my only mission before I go. The missions consist of seeing a muscular kangaroo, finding a cockatoo and holding koalas. That’s 3 things, that’s 3 things I have to do.”
In terms of preparations and Sonica, what can we look forward to at your Sonica performance?
Amber: “I’m bringing back a lot of old songs and some new ones. I think it’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster ride. There will be intense moments, some soft moments, some sad moments and happy moments. In the end, I just hope that the atmosphere is right for me and my team. I’m just happy to have time tomorrow to show all the hard work that I and my team have put in.”
Latest news for Aussie fans?
Amber: “I love you guys so much, you guys are the best, seriously. I can’t wait to perform tomorrow, I’m super excited. I hope everyone is having fun. I’ll be back, send me some notes online to explore and get me the tea on the Sydney-Melbourne rivalry.”
As mentioned above, Amber’s new song titled “No More Sad Songs” has now been released, listen below:
