Joe Pesci Says Home Alone 2 Stunt Left Him With Severe Burns

The Goodfellas graduate recalled being injured after his hat caught fire for a stunt sequence in the 1992 film.

Joe Pesci had to go home and get his grooming kit after suffering burns on the set of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

Pesci reprized his role of burglar Harry opposite fellow criminal Marv (Daniel Stern), both of whom set out to terrorize Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) in the Big Apple. While Pesci was more than funny as a clown in the Chris Columbus-directed 1990 film, the “Goodfellas” graduate was left with “serious burns” on his head due to a now-iconic fire scene.

“In addition to the expected bumps, bruises, and general aches and pains one would associate with this particular brand of physical humor, I sustained serious burns to my head during the scene where Harry’s hat is set on fire,” said Pesci People magazine. “I’ve been fortunate that professional stuntmen do the really hard stunts.”

The Irishman star added, “It was a nice change of pace to do this particular brand of slapstick comedy. The Home Alone movies were a more physical type of comedy, so they were a little more challenging.”

While Pesci is ready to reprise the role in the popular franchise, he admitted that bringing the film to the present day would be “difficult.”

“You never say never, but I think reproducing not only the success but the overall innocence of the originals would be difficult,” Pesci said. “It is a different time now; Attitudes and priorities have changed in 30 years.”

Now Pesci is instead focused on playing Pete Davidson’s grandfather in the meta-comedy Peacock series Bupkis alongside Edie Falco. Saturday Night Live alum Davidson is writing, starring and producing the upcoming show, helmed by Big Time Adolescence director Jason Orley, who also serves as co-executive producer.

According to an official synopsis, “Bupkis” is a heightened, fictionalized version of Pete Davidson’s real life. The series will combine grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the unfiltered and totally original worldview that Pete is known for. The show has already drawn comparisons to Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm meta-series. Davidson joined SNL in 2014 at the age of 20 as a lead cast member, making him one of the youngest cast members in the show’s nearly 50-year history. He split from the live sketch comedy series in 2022.
