While Jenna Ortega seems to be a brilliant Wednesday Addams on the Netflix series, working alongside her predecessor was nerve-wracking
Jenna Ortega has some big shoes to fill for many fans of the 1990 film adaptation The Addams family, as she takes on the role of Wednesday Addams in the new Netflix series based on the character. This seems to be something for the boys though Scream Star is more than capable of that, given her predecessor Christina Ricc Working with her on the show was a scary experience.
Wednesday is one of the most anticipated shows coming to Netflix this fall, and while there were many initial doubts as to whether Jenna Ortega could make the iconic role her own and still please fans of Ricci’s take on the big screen, those doubts are Little by little, details evaporated and footage from the series surfaced. Coming from Tim Burton, the show immediately screams gothic, and that’s set in the weirdly spooky world of the ooky-crazy family.
When it comes to playing the role of Wednesday, it seems like the most intimidating part was portraying the character while starring alongside Christina Ricci, who appears as a new character on the series. Ortega tells Empire Magazine:
“I felt like I was really having a panic attack when I was told. I was shocked. She’s a really cool woman. I was fine meeting her, but the first time we did a scene together and she had to crush me like she was 30 years ago, it was nerve wracking.”
Christina Ricci is one of Jenna Ortega’s biggest fans
While Christina Ricci will still be Wednesday Addams to many older fans, the actress was more than happy the mantle passed to Jenna Ortega, and she’s one of the biggest fans of how the young actress played the character in the new Netflix -Series. Earlier Ricci said:
“It’s great fun. I loved working with Tim [Burton]. I worked with Gwendolyn Christie, it was amazing. And Jenna is amazing. I saw some of the wardrobe photos before I left [to set] so i knew [what she looked like in character] and I thought it’s such a great modern take on Wednesday. It so sonically hits the heart and soul of [the original]but then it’s incredibly modern and gorgeous.”
Ricci was also excited to take on a new role on the series after being asked by Tim Burton to be part of the series. Three decades after playing Wednesday, she considers it part of her identity and couldn’t turn down the offer to continue being a part of it in some way. She said:
“It’s Tim Burton, I was so honored to be asked by him because he’s just, you know, a genius. And then also to be a part, to be asked to be a part of the new version of this thing that is a big part of my identity and my story in my life. I mean, I know they didn’t do it out of the goodness of their hearts, but it really touched me and I felt like it was very beautiful. And it’s such a fun world and my character is outrageous and funny and unlike anything I’ve done and it was really awesome. And I just had a really nice experience with Jenna, which is amazing, and I think now people have a taste of their Wednesday, and it’s going to be amazing.”
Wednesday Streams on Netflix starting November 23, 2022.
