Jane Austen’s birthplace goes on the market for £8.5million

An English country mansion, where Jane Austen wrote some of her greatest works, went on the market for £8.5 million (US$10.35 million).

Austen lived in her family’s stately home in Hampshire, known as Steventon House, in the village of the same name, from 1775 to 1801, a 26-year period during which she wrote her famous novels Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility .”

At the turn of the 19th century, after most of the family moved away, Austen’s brother Edward replaced the family’s original home with the Steventon House that stands there today, according to listing agency Savills, who listed the house alongside Knight on Thursday Market brought Frank

“Many households across the country can claim to have ties to some of Britain’s most historic figures, but only Steventon House was the birthplace of legendary author Jane Austen, where she wrote some of her most important works,” said Ed Sugden, director of Savills’ country department .

“While the original house no longer stands, today stands the glorious Georgian vision of her older brother Edward, which is very appropriate to the world Jane wrote about,” he added.

Today the Georgian house has been extensively renovated and features oversized sash windows, high ceilings, stately antique fireplaces with decorative stone and carved wood surrounds, several reception rooms and a bespoke kitchen and breakfast room.

Upstairs are six bedrooms including a master suite with bathroom, dressing room and walk-in closet. The house also has an attic and a temperature-controlled wine cellar.

This home is “a remarkable property, steeped in history, but also offers first class accommodation full of character, the result of an extensive refurbishment of the very highest quality,” said Edward Cunningham of Knight Frank. “The ornate fireplaces, high ceilings and sash windows reflect the property’s rich heritage, while amenities such as the swimming pool and tennis court provide a real sense of contemporary luxury.”

These luxurious amenities are joined on site by formal gardens, a tree lined driveway, cherry trees, wisteria walkway, patios, a greenhouse and a vegetable garden.

There is also a charming two bedroom cottage equipped with a kitchen, dining room and living room.

Ownership records do not indicate when the house last changed hands or for how much.
