Inside SOTW Mag: Masterclasses on offshore racing’s biggest stage

Like any other group of competitors, offshore powerboat racers focus on winning. Still, sometimes it’s better to back off and settle for second place. Take for example owner/accelerator Tyler Miller and driver Myrick Coil and their 38 foot skater, M CON. The pair had finished second in the Super Cat class on day one of the 2022 Race World Offshore Key West Championships on Friday. In the second of two races for the world title on Sunday, their main rival went off the track with mechanical problems and they knew they didn’t have to take the checkered flag to claim the sport’s ultimate prize.

Getting that message across to the extremely enthusiastic Miller was no easy task. In the opening laps on Sunday, Coil reiterated, “We don’t have to hit CELSIUS‘ as Miller opened the boat wide. Miller admitted the news didn’t get through immediately.
“We came out of the harbor turn and I was like, ‘Okay, I don’t have to hit her,'” Miller said, then chuckled.
Miller and Coil maintained their position and two second places were enough to give the team its first Super Cat World Championship. The title will be awarded by combining the points from the two races and as the boats complete more laps on Sunday double points will be awarded for the day.
“It took a long time,” Miller said of his first title.
Second in the final Super Cat standings was owner/driver Wayne Valder and accelerator Grant Bruggemann in the 42-foot MTI. CELSIUSand throttleman Vinnie Diorio and driver Simon Prevost placed third in the 39-foot outer limits. SV Offshore Race.
