The Red Wings are still trying to figure out what went wrong Tuesday night against the Nashville Predators. Detroit beat Smashville 29-16 in the game, but Alex Chiasson’s power play goal in the third wasn’t enough as the Wings lost 2-1. The loss marked Detroit’s eighth in the last 10 games as it continues to wriggle out of playoff contention. On Saturday, the Wings are second to bottom in the Atlantic Division and nine points behind the New York Islanders for the last wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
After a slow start to cup defense, the Avalanche have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL for the past month, rising from a bubble toilet team to a top-three finish in the Central Division. After their tour of Ontario, which included wins against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, Colorado sits third in the Central, five points ahead of fourth-placed Winnipeg Jets and just three behind division leaders Dallas Stars.
This will be the second and final clash of the season between the former playoff rivals. The Avs clinched a 6-3 win in Denver in January and have won nine straight meetings since the 2017-18 season.
