How to make a bookshelf in Minecraft?

Minecraft started out as a survival game in a world of pixelated blocks, but there are now plenty of new items to craft to help survive in the hostile environment. Bookshelves are not new releases, but not everyone knows how to make them. With many new Minecraft players picking up the game, it’s best to understand how to create one.

How to make a bookshelf in Minecraft?

The materials to create a bookshelf are the same no matter what platform you’re playing on. However, the exact instructions may differ. Read on to find out more.

Create a bookshelf in Minecraft on PC

Before we tell you how to build a bookshelf, here are some prerequisites you should have.

  • crafting table
  • Books
  • wooden boards

Each bookshelf consists of six blocks of any type of wood and three books. Check out the recipes for these items if you don’t have them.

A crafting table is created by collecting four wooden plank blocks and using the 2×2 crafting grid in your inventory. Place all four blocks in the grid and grab the crafting table. You can now use the 3×3 grid needed to create bookshelves.

Minecraft has many types of wood, but they all work when building a crafting table. These include:

Boards are crafted by filling a 2×2 grid with a block of wood. One block makes four boards.

Once the crafting table is created, you can start crafting some books. Each book requires three paper materials and one leather.

Harvest some cane and make a horizontal line with a Crafting Table grid. You will receive three papers.

Place a leather in the center of the crafting table grid and place a paper in the left slot, top center slot, and top left corner. It will form a square and make a book.

Now that you have all the necessary materials, you can easily create a bookshelf.

  1. Go to the crafting table.
  2. Open the crafting grid by right-clicking on the table.
  3. Fill the top and bottom rows with boards of your choice.
  4. Drag and drop three books to fill the middle row.
  5. Click and drag on the result to get your bookshelf.

This is how you can create a bookshelf on a PC. Bookshelves can still be used to craft other items, but they have their own uses.

Players can find bookshelves in villages that have librarians. An entry-level librarian has a 66.67% chance of selling one for nine Emeralds in Java Edition.

Create a bookshelf in Minecraft on an Xbox

Regardless of the console generation, the controls on an Xbox are the same. Microsoft has kept the buttons on its controllers similar over the years. Unless you change some controls, you can expect the same layout.

  1. Go to your crafting table or use LT to place it on the ground.
  2. Press LT to interact with the crafting table.
  3. Use LT to place boards in the top and bottom rows.
  4. Do the same but with middle row books.
  5. Grab the bookshelf with LT and place it in your inventory or hotbar.
  6. Repeat as needed.

Before creating a bookshelf, you need to collect the necessary resources, like on a PC. Fortunately, there is no difference in this process.

Create a bookshelf in Minecraft on a Switch

Nintendo Switch players can use the Pro Controller, JoyCons, or a third-party controller to play Minecraft. The control scheme is the same by default. You don’t have to worry about memorizing more than one layout.

  1. Travel to your crafting table or place it on the floor with ZL.
  2. Press ZL or its equivalent to bring up the Crafting Table menu.
  3. Place some ZL boards on the top and bottom rows of the grid.
  4. Drop three books in the middle row.
  5. Take the crafted bookshelf with ZL.
  6. Put it in your inventory.
  7. Repeat the steps as needed.

Knowing this, you can create bookshelves on the go while playing your Switch in handheld mode.

Create a bookshelf in Minecraft Bedrock

Minecraft Bedrock is the version developed for multi-platform compatibility and it is the edition that can be found on most consoles. Therefore, it is not compatible with Minecraft Java Edition, the default game that PC gamers like to enjoy.

Having said that, creating a bookshelf in Minecraft Bedrock is identical to creating a bookshelf in Java Edition. Here are the steps.

  1. Move to your crafting table or place one on the ground with your hotbar and right-click.
  2. Right-click on the crafting table.
  3. Drag and drop six boards onto the crafting grid, three each in the top and bottom rows.
  4. Drop three books in the middle row.
  5. Click on the bookshelf to store it in your inventory.
  6. Repeat the process if you need more.

As you can see, the bookcase in the Bedrock Edition is not a challenge. You can also exchange them with librarians located in villages. Unlike Java Edition, the chance of getting the trading opportunity is lower at 50%.

How to use bookshelves

The main function of a bookshelf in Minecraft is to increase the potency of enchantments. When a tool or weapon is enchanted, it gains benefits that make it more effective at its task. In the case of weapons, they could defeat mobs faster or even come back to you after throwing them.

Enchanted tools and weapons have a purple cast that covers the entire object. If you hold it, you can see the purple flow of light while equipping it.

Here are some possible enchantments:

  • Curls
  • mending
  • Silky touch
  • Hit
  • Unbreakable
  • infinity

Without bookshelves, an enchantment table can’t reach the highest enchantment levels, meaning you won’t have access to the best buffs. Players need to build 15 bookshelves and place them around the enchantment table to reach the highest levels. Before version 1.3.1 this number was 30.

Bookshelves must be two blocks to the side of the Enchanting Table, but exact placement differs between Bedrock and Java editions. Regardless, you cannot place torches or rugs in the empty space, as this will prevent the enchantment table from detecting the bookshelves.

Manufacture lecterns

Lecterns contain a book and quill or written book that players can read by interacting with it. In multiplayer mode, desks can contain the rules and regulations of a server. Server owners and admins can place them near spawn points where new players arrive first.

As such, lecterns are great for helping newcomers familiarize themselves with local practices and customs. The books they hold may contain more words than characters.

If you visit a village, you will find lecterns in a librarian’s house. Villagers who don’t have jobs can choose to become Librarians by placing a lectern near them.

To craft lecterns you will need a bookshelf and four panels. Any wood panel will work, including combining multiple woods.

The lectern recipe has three panels in the top row, a bookshelf in the center square, and another panel below the bookshelf. The recipe appears in the form of a “T”.

emergency fuel

Although not recommended, you can burn a bookshelf for fuel in your Blast Furnace, Blast Furnace, or Smoker. Bookshelves can melt or cook 1.5 items at a time. As such they are woefully inefficient fuel and should never be used unless there is no other choice.

Change note block sounds

As with some blocks, you can place a bookshelf under note blocks to create bass sounds. This feature is useful for players who make music in Minecraft.

Make some magic

Bookshelves are great for increasing the possible enchantment levels for tools and weapons, making them leagues better than their standard counterparts. In addition, they are used to craft lecterns, objects useful in multiplayer. Knowing this will give you access to some of Minecraft’s best items.
