After years of waiting, you can finally change and replace biomes in Minecraft. We’re not just talking about transporting blocks and mobs from one biome to another. Instead, a new command in Minecraft 1.20 lets you move all of the environment features, mob spawns, and other elements of a biome anywhere in the game. This opens up a ton of possibilities, especially for the best minecraft maps and some previously impossible minecraft mob farms. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and first learn how to change biomes in Minecraft using the fillbiome command.

How To Change Biomes In Minecraft 1.20 (2022)

Please note that the fillbiome command was first introduced with Minecraft 1.20 Snapshot 22W46A and is still being tested. Therefore, its syntax, functioning and mechanics could be changed before the final release.

What is a biome in Minecraft?

In Minecraft, the term biome refers to the Environmental features of a specific region including atmosphere, sky, ambient sounds, and even texture toning. Not to mention, some Minecraft mobs can only spawn in certain biomes. For example, the desert biome has a high temperature, no spawn mechanics for plants, and spawns camels and husks in relation to exclusive mobs. Husks are a variant of zombies that only spawn in the desert.

As you may have noticed, while describing any biome, we’re not talking about blocks. That’s because you can replace blocks in a biome, but you can’t change their environmental features. This makes it impossible for nether mobs to spawn in the overworld and vice versa. Well, at least until you decide to Use the fillbiome command.. When this command is run, it changes the default biome-based capabilities of one location with the capabilities of another biome in Minecraft. Later more.

Exclusive features of biomes

Almost every Minecraft biome has some exclusive features. You can use our linked guide to learn more about each of them. But to save you some time, here are some examples of such features that you can consider when testing the new command:

  • Mushroom Fields: Enemy mobs cannot spawn in this biome
  • purple forest (Nether): Known for its mist and reddish particles
  • Empty: The biome where no plants, structures, or mobs spawn
  • Wasteland: Gold ores spawn the most in this biome
  • Exit Highlands: Only endermen spawn in this biome
  • Savannah: The plantation and blocks in this biome have a light sepia color scheme

How does the Fill Biome command work?

The new fill biome command is similar to the existing fill command in Minecraft. the previous replaces an area’s biome-based traits, while the latter replaces the blocks of that region. However, remember that unlike blocks, biomes do not have strict coordinates. Instead, if you’re a seasoned Minecraft player, you know that different biomes intermingle the blocks at the edges where they meet. So you need to expand your coordinates while trying to change a biome in Minecraft.

With the basics out of the way, here is the syntax for the biome fill command:

/fillbiome A_coordinates B_coordinates biom_name

On a three-dimensional plane, A_Coordinates is the corner of the area from where you want the biome change to start, and B_Coordinates is where you want the biome change to end. Both coordinates must be given in numerical values corresponding to the X, Y and Z dimensions. Here, X, Y, and Z stand for Altitude, Elevation, and Latitude, respectively.

Finally, after the coordinates, you must enter the Biome name you want to fill the area with. Once you execute the command, the biome in the entire area between these two points will be replaced with the biome of your choice.
