How Multiverse of Madness’ Opening Weekend Compares to 2016’s Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and so far, it’s definitely a financial hit. Igniting the box office like nothing else has in 2022, the movie is a triumphant return for Marvel’s good doctor. This is especially noticeable compared to how his first movie fared.

the first Doctor Strange was also successful, but nothing like what the new movie has done. This can be attributed to a few different factors, but the result is a huge win for Marvel’s bottom line. Here’s how the two strange films compare monetarily.

How Did the First Doctor Strange Perform on Its Opening Weekend?

Released in the United States and many other territories on November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange was greeted with decent to good reviews. This was par for the course by this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it was further reflected in the decent box office intake on opening weekend. The box office haul of 2016’s Doctor Strange in the United States and Canada after its first weekend was about $85 million. Likewise, the movie earned $107 million during its opening weekend from 33 different international markets.

This brought up the total opening weekend haul to about $192 million. from there, Doctor Strange would go on to make a total of $677 million at the box office. This was very impressive given the fact that Strange himself wasn’t particularly well-known and wasn’t established in previous movies like some of the other Avengers had been. This magical amount of money made was only the tip of the iceberg for Doctor Strange, however, and his second movie was a much bigger hit in its maiden weekend.

Doctor Strange 2 Easily Surpassed the First’s Opening Weekend Box Office

Released in early May 2022, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out almost six years after the original movie. This was due to the busy schedule of the MCU, with several crossovers and origin films being made for other heroes in the interim. However, this space between releases only helped to strengthen Strange’s magic as shown by how much the second movie made.

In its opening weekend, Multiverse of Madness made $185 million in the US and Canada, as well as $265 million in other territories. This brought its opening weekend gross to about $450 million, putting it almost halfway to the billion-dollar mark. This can be attributed to Doctor Strange’s increased popularity since the first movie, likely due to his pivotal role in Avengers: Infinity War other Avengers: Endgame. There are also more characters along for the ride this time, including Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, as well as universe-hopping teenager America Chavez.

There’s also the fact that many expected due to its premise that the film would build on the multiversal cameo shenanigans of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It did to a small extent, but it wasn’t quite what some viewers might have imagined. This may be part of the reason why the film’s reviews, though still mostly positive, are still rather muted and tepid for such an anticipated MCU entry. Nevertheless, Multiverse of Madness is a huge hit that’s sure to score even more money and continue both the MCU and Doctor Strange’s trajectory of success.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in theaters now.
