Hokie’s bench scores 26 points in 73-57 win over Missouri

NASSAU, Bahamas–The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team pulled off a 26-point performance off the bench en route to a 73-57 win over the Missouri Tigers Wednesday at the Baha Mar Convention Center.

The Hokies (5-0) had three players in double digits, led by Kayana Traylorwho had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Elizabeth Kitley pinned on a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Georgia Amoore also with 15 points and six assists.

Virginia Tech racked up 36 rebounds in Wednesday’s game compared to Missouri’s 24, led by Kitley’s 10 boards. The Hokies also worked on offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 15 second-chance points.

Virginia Tech’s defense kept the Missouri shooters only 37.5 percent off the field. The Tigers didn’t get many second chances on the offensive end, snagging just six offensive rebounds and scoring five second-chance points while Virginia Tech slammed 25 defensive rebounds.

How it happened

From a 3-0 deficit, Virginia Tech went 8:53 in the first quarter on a 5-0 run that culminated in a three-pointer from Amoore to take a 5-3 lead. The Hokies then gave up this lead and went into the second quarter at 14:11.

Missouri continued to extend that lead, building an 18-14 lead before Virginia Tech took a 19-18 lead on a 5-0 run. The Tigers then came back and went into halftime with a 28-26 lead.

Virginia Tech came out of halftime on a 7-0 run cut by a three Cayla Kingto grab a 33-28 lead with a 7:06 in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies increased that lead by seven points and went into the fourth quarter with a 49-37 lead. Virginia Tech’s bench made the most of their minutes during the period as non-starters totaled 12 of the team’s 23 points in the third quarter.

Virginia Tech kept her lead intact before starting a 7-0 run that was ended by Amoore’s Springer to extend the lead to 61-44 with 4-38 remaining in the contest. The Tigers reduced the lead slightly before the game was over, but the Hokies still drove the rest of the way for the 73-57 win.
